Transmission Empty Transmission

Post by rich65vwbus Wed Apr 27, 2011 5:22 pm

I have a 1965 Vw Transporter with original Tranny. Doodle Bugg just rebulit the engine (1600cc~A OK Job!) and mentioned a later Bug Tranny that would be more "highway friendly" my top speed now is 65-70 if I'm going down hill. Doodle mentioned I could get a rebulit for $200. I would like to explore this option any thoughts? I will be away till Sunday going to a Blugrass Festival in N.C. any thoughts ideas or pointers would be greatly appreciated, Peace Rich-B

Hey Rich I have a tranny out of a 65 type 3 that would do the trick. It would allow you to keep the wide 5 pattern with better brakes and get down the road better. $50.00 if interested.

Thanks Mike for taking time and talking to me today. I would like to possibly get the tranny checked out. Does anyone know a reasonable Transmission guy?

So Tranny is to Steve Cole ...Man he has a nice shop! gave him $ to check it out if its good have him install it and take out gear box to which will increse speed. I will have the Tranny out of the bus I will either barter for install or sell. The ball is rolling

Wow that is something that will have to be put on the back burner. Steve quoted me $1,500 to 2,000 for the Transmsion swop and "kit" I got my enginge rebuilt and a new Carb for $1,000 Im sorry cant see paying twice that amout for a tranny. I'll save the money and go slow. Steve wants $250 to rebuild the type 3 Tranny if anyone is interested in it PM me

Im not the most mechanicly enclined I was told that the Reduction Boxes have to go and I'll need a"kit" to swithch it over. Im Open to ideas But not to dropping an arm and a leg. I think she move about just fine a little slow but good enough for me.

the 68 bug tranny is still swing axle so thats taken care of

but you would need adapters for the wheels because in 68 the drums are 4 lug

and i think they just bolt up but im not sure someone with a bus will chime in here soon im sure

way I look at it if its not broke dont fix it. Plus keeping it original increases the value of her. I would never sell her though

To install the beetle tranny into the bus you either need a straight axle kit which has lengthened short axle tubes and modified spring plates or you need offset spring plates which is the way I went
