Herrell's Air-Cooled Parts and Resto
Herrell's Air-Cooled Parts and Resto
herrellsbugparts.com
Left car for diagnostics on March 1 or Feb 28. Went to pick it up on March 8th at which point they told me the motor was stolen.
The story as I have it:
They came to work March 3 and saw that the car was in an unexpected place. Went to examine it and saw that the motor was stolen and that it appeared they had tried to steal the whole car, but the wheels locked on them. Stick shift missing, ignition switch missing, motor missing to the bare transaxle. No other visible damage besides the wires which were cut to get motor out. Police were reportedly called that day. Police didn't come out Thursday so they were reportedly called again Friday at which time they came out and filled out a police report on the incident. Tuesday I go to pick up the car at which point they tell me that the motor was stolen. I ask if they have insurance and they say no. They make no offer to rectify situation and I am left taking my car home motor-less. Their attitude is one of "Them's the breaks" and that they "are not responsible for thieves". They said they did not call me because they wanted to try and find the motor. Car was apparently unlocked because no break-in was evident.
Impossible to say how much I can recommend against using someone who will not be responsible for your property while it is in their care.

True, but most businesses are not responsible for your vehicle or contents while left at there places or shops.Hopefully if it was stolen maybe it will turn up somewhere. Most of us know each other and our parts. If not karma will come back and kick their asses!

Re: Herrell's Air-Cooled Parts and Resto
you are right...and almost every shop you go in...including Herrels, has a sign up stating they are not responsible. it is a risk you assume when you leave your car at a shop where it is not in a locked fence. even if it was locked inside...if someone wants it, they'll get it..and alocked door on a VW never stopped a thief! Lindy has always seemed to be a stand up guy to me.i would hope if you talked with him in a calm/rational manner he would be willing to work with you. sorry for your luck.

I was everything but irrational. I spoke to him calmly... 6 days after it happened since he didn't bother to call me to tell me my property was stolen. I suspect if you had been a fly on the wall when this had happened your hopes would be dashed against the rocks of reality. I've never been anything but nice, and I've never raised my voice. Also, had the door to my car been locked, I suspect they would have had a harder time getting inside to try to wheel it away, a harder time stealing my stick-shift, a harder time ripping out my ignition switch. The truth of this matter is, of course, that I have insurance. I'm insured. Had I not been I am assured that I would simply be out of luck. Now, you can take that as advice or leave it as simply my bad luck. I, on the other hand, take it as a lesson that I can't leave my property with someone who won't take responsibility for it. This isn't a post to roast Lindy or Herrell's Bug Parts. It's a story about what happened to me when I left my car there. I took a good car there, and left without an engine. If you can afford to do that then go right ahead and test your luck.

It's a good thing that you had insurance on the car, you'll get paid for the loss, but your insurance company will probably sue Lindy to recover from him

Re: Herrell's Air-Cooled Parts and Resto
I can understand a shop not wanting to be responsible if your radio gets stolen, but not having insurance that would cover an engine theft at your business??!!

Re: Herrell's Air-Cooled Parts and Resto
This is interesting and thanks for posting. We were up there two weeks ago to get some pans. Michael talked with them about doing the rewire on the '66. We decided that day...that if we could make arrangements to take it in early one morning (trailer) and bring it home that afternoon......we would be happy for them to do the job. If not, no way I was leaving my bug even overnight. No offense to Lindy personally or not degrading the job they do. So happy they are there for our parts. Just did not look like a place I would leave my bug.
On another note, being a small business owner with vehicles (horsedrawn) left at our shop for sometimes extended periods, (even if our insurance did not cover) we would feel a responsibility to "make it right".

x2
That is total bulls**t! I had my truck broken into when it was at a shop about 10 yrs ago, and the stereo system was stolen. The shop's insurance covered it....
I know now to never give that shop my biz...regardless of how great the people are who work there...that is just bad business...shame on Herrel bugs

Re: Herrell's Air-Cooled Parts and Resto
Did Lindy Fulfill his agreement? Just wondering how this turned out?
And this is one of the many reasons i learned to work on cars, and not just my VW's. the only thing im lacking on a VW is rebuilding a tranny and im working on that....
