tranny/clutch question 68' type1 Empty tranny/clutch question 68' type1

Post by 68buggirrl Tue Jun 15, 2010 9:23 pm

Hey i have a 68 type 1 if that helps

Anyways after it has been driven about 20-30 minutes (I daily to WindyHill from Temple Ga) 1st gear wont stay in and it pops out. Its pretty loud I might add. I finally got it to stay after the fourth time.

Now 2nd gear. Whenever (whether cold or warm) it will make a grinding sound with clutch put all the way in.

/what do I need to look for? Thanks

My '57 Bug is on a '68 Pan, and when my transaxle started popping out of gears (2nd and reverse) my mechanic said it was the input shaft, and recommended I get a new transaxle. I put in a freeway flyer and changed the ratios up a little, it's almost like an overdrive now in 4th.

I've never had one popping out of gears, but from what I've read, it's a good sign your gonna need another tranny soon. Maybe get your mechanic to take a quick look at your tranny mounts, specifically the front one. I suppose if it were worn pretty bad that could possibly also cause issues.

I replaced my mount on the 68 baja, the motor/tranny slides back just enough to get them swapped without pulling anything apart.

If you mean Herrells....I'm sure they would! Razz
Here's their toll free number- 1-866-437-7355
and a link Lindy and da Boyz

Hope you find it's a simple solution! While your under there- check your transaxle, and make sure it's topped off with enough gear oil too. It's easy.

If you do find your transmission mount is bad, remember that you should readjust your shifter. I had this problem on my '67 bug, it turned out not to be any mounts, but the shifter itself. Apparently being out of adjustment, when I put the car in gear, it really wasn't 100% in gear. The shifter was not letting the shift forks to fully en-gauge the gear. So under a light load it was staying in gear most of the time, jump on it and it would pop out of gear.

Good luck, maybe its a simple fix!

Good luck, but popping out of gear and being loud USUALLY means the tranny has had it. The noise is usually the main shaft bearing.

Worked on her Alllll day (since 9am) and did a lot of stuff.

Anyways my trans looked fine. My mount was in good shape. I do smell a sweet smell near my rear passenger wheel. Im thinking it is the break goo. (need a wheel cyl back there.)

Did some research, im going to have to start saving some money for a tranny soon. if anyone has any trans knowledge I can pay you to look at it and fix it if it means saving cash and keeping my tranny.

Besides that i did some bodywork. I have a nice chrome rear bumper and a black muffler now. lol

^8 was a changeover year on transaxles- she could have a swing or IRS.
Is there 2 axleboots or 4?
