What color should i go with
Turbo Mike's YUBuggin DownHill Racer
Well i was gonna keep my downhill racer a secret, but decided "what the hell" and am just gonna make a "build thread" on it. It also seems not too many people are doing it, so hopefully it will encourage a few others to participate.
Basically it's a small fiberglass beetle body i will attach to my go-kart. The plans are to Chop the top, and am not sure weather i want to cut the fenders off and make it a rat rod, or just leave it as is. Here are some pics of the body, and the gokart:
I just did some of the fiber glassing you see in the pics ( i still smell like resin, hahaha.). I reconnected the piece that would normall be above the engine in a real bug, below the window (hard to see from the pic). Also the piece between where the back window goes and rear side window. The hardest part was the top windshield frame. there was an 8 inch chunk missing, so i had to make that part from scratch. I think it came out pretty good. Still got some finishing up to do, and next step is Filler. Then paint.

Oh, and whatever color wins, thats what i'll paint it. And whatever color does win, flames will be added in a contrasting color.

If i do hot pink, i'll prolly do blue flames crawling up the hood.
If lime green, then prolly yellow flames
If other, then i guess i'll make something else up, since no one is telling me what their other is, lol.
etc.

I would go green, and leave the fenders on it. If you ever want to get rid of it let me know! Have a friend that has a red one on a go-kart and saw a yellow one on top of a house near a campout last year or maybe the year before... Had thought about making my coin op bug a kart but it is leaving the basement here soon so will be looking for one like yours.
What one looks like pink....

Re: Turbo Mike's YUBuggin DownHill Racer
hahaha, nice. I just hope i can even get around to painting it. The problem i'm facing now is the white frame in the pics above is a bit too long for the body(hence the reason i was thinking about making it a rat rod, if i match up the rear wheels, the front wheels would stick out perfect like a rat rod). I have a lead on a free gokart frame, and i just gotta see if it will fit, but then i'll have to figure out a way to attach the body to the frame.
I don't plan to get rid of it anytime soon. After the downhill race, i got an 18hp briggs vanguard V-twin motor i'm gonna slap on that thing. about as much power as a 50's model bug, hahaha .

Re: Turbo Mike's YUBuggin DownHill Racer
Have you started on yours yet? it would suck to be the only one there with a downhill racer, lol.
Yesrerday, i cut the top windshield frame off, about half way in the middle of the rag top frame part. And preped it for fiberglassing (sanded the edges of the cuts so the glass would stick). Also did a lot of sanding down, and smoothing on the repairs i already did, in preperation for filler, and what looks to be Hot Pink Paint .
Damn, why did i put that as a color choice
