need help with wiring, again
I have the engine ready to crank, but my bus had a rat nest in wires. I am going to re_wire everything soon, but I want to get the engine started this weekend. The only wire I have is the green wire coming from the distributor. I know enough to get me in trouble. Can someone give me a simple explanation on how to wire it just to get it cranked?
Thanks
Thanks

Re: need help with wiring, again
You need to get a 12 volts from the battery connection on the starter to the spade connector on the solenoid. If your careful a screw driver will bridge the 2 and get it to crank over for you. You can also make a jumper with a push button to do the cranking.
Now if your carburated, make another jumper with a toggle switch and send 12 volts to the (+) side of the coil. If the points are set correct, coil is good and the green wire from the distributor is connected to the (-) side of the coil you should have a spark. Should run until you flip the 12 volt toggle to the coil.
If your fuel injected, I have no idea without looking at a wiring diagram.

Re: need help with wiring, again
Thank you very much. I have a remote start trigger, so I don't have to use a screwdriver. How about the 2 connections on top of the alternator? I am only going to run it for about a minute, but I would like to know how to this wires.

Re: need help with wiring, again
To do a test run I would not worry about yet. Your battery would run the engine for at least 20 minutes before dying on you. You can also hook up a battery charger on 10 amps (low charge rate) and that would keep the battery charged while you ran it for a while (Break in).
For a '75 and up style alternator you need to make sure the single spade connector (Blue wire) is connected to the dash light (Charging light in the speedo). The alt also needs to have an two (2) 8 or 10 gauge wires connected to it. The 1st wire will run from the alternator to the (+) cable lug on the starter, this is putting a charge back into the battery when running. Then the other wire on the same alt lug will go to the headlight switch which will disburse the 12 volts to the ignition switch and fuse block to run the car.
If you have a non fuel injected bus this should get you running. I looked at a wiring diagram on the Samba for a '76 bus and its not pretty.

Re: need help with wiring, again
I am running the last few wires to finish the engine bay, and I need to wire a few more things. There is a switch in the side of the carb, i do not know what this is? I also need to wire up the alternator. The engine runs fine, but I need to connect the alternator.
If anyone thinks of any other thing I should have connected, please let me know. This engine is from a 67 beetle, I am sure there is an oil sending unit somewhere.
Thanks

If it is on the drivers side of the carb, it sounds like the idle cut-off switch. This gets a very short wire from the + side of the coil.
The oil sending unit should be on the drivers side of the case just below the distributor. Pic stolen from the samba

Re: need help with wiring, again
Alternators come in two styles. One has three wires and the other has two. There should be a spade terminal and a ring terminal if it's a two wire set up. Also, if it had a generator before, you'll need to bypass the voltage regulator because the two wire setup in internally regulated.

not sure what carb your running, but if it still has a working electric choke, i always like to make a wire myself. just take two pieces of wire (approx 14 guage), about 8 inches long, stick one end of both wires into one spade terminal end (10 guage yellow), the put another spade terminal (12-14 guage, Blue i think) on each end of the wires. the middle one goes to the idle cutoff, one end goes to the choke, and the last end goes to the coil. quick, easy, and clean. it would be a lot better to solder all the wire ends, and go with heatshrink afterwards, but its not nessesary. crimp type connections will last pretty long.

Re: need help with wiring, again
Big red wire goes to the closest terminal to you as you look at the engine and it leads to the starter solenoid.
Smaller wire goes to the terminal in the front (furthest away as you look at alt) and leads to dash light.
