Steering column bearing [or bearings] Empty Steering column bearing [or bearings]

Post by 69panel Tue Aug 25, 2009 6:03 pm

My steering column has major slop. When you hold the wheel you can move it left or right or up and down. It's like a bearing is either missing or toast. I tried to Google a DIY fix or replacement procedure. I couldn't find anything.

Can anyone out there help????

Or does anyone have a nice steering column for reasonable?

It's a 1974 standard but if another year earlier will fit I'd be interested in that since my ignition switch is not stock anyway.

It's been awhile since I've taken one apart.....
But if I'm not mistaken there is a plastic collar that fits around the steering shaft itself
and it gets inserted into the bearing to tighten everything up and it has come loose......
At least that is what it sounds like.
And I beleive you can get to it by removeing the steering wheel and maybe the turn signal switch.
