New Member looking to get into a restoration
Hey everyone! My name is Brandon. I'll be honest I don't own a air cooled VW yet, but I'm looking to get a beetle in the 1968 to 71 window to begin a restoration. I'm aware that a restoration can be an expensive and daunting task but I'm up for the challenge, and I figure that this would be the perfect place to help me get local info on parts, shops for metal and body work, and who knows even help me with insider knowledge on that sweet barn find. At this point I'm in the saving and research phase. If it's any consolation for you guys I have owned or currently own 5 water cooled VWs in my life and have loved them all (Although the Routan is negotiable as VW). My wife and I have owned a 2000 Beetle, a 2004 GLS Jetta, a 2005 GLI Jetta, and we currently own a 2012 TDI Jetta, and a 2013 Routan SE. Although it's not a VW I also have a 2000 Nissan Frontier for jobs on that weekend honey do list. I'm a full time Mechanic in the Georgia Army National Guard and I'm married with 2 kids with another on the way.

Welcome to Georgia Dubs! '68-'71 Beetle should be fairly easy to source parts for, try to find a good candidate without a bunch of rust and you'll be fine

Re: New Member looking to get into a restoration
Thanks guys! Since it's my first restoration I want to start with something that is easier and avoid heater channel work if I can. I know parts should be easier to get so that's a plus. I know a younger beetle would have less rust and will be cheaper and easier to find than a beetle that is 10 years older. Plus I just like those years. I like the high back seats and padded dash that come on a 68+ amongst other things so it's a win-win.

You can just about count on doing the pans on most of those cars- but I'd avoid heater channels if I could

Yeah I'm not a strong welder or painter. I'm your everyday technician. When I used to work at the dealership anything that fell into that category we sent to the body shop. That's why I'm hoping being around on this site I can find some real good local connections on stuff like this. Maybe even some people who specialize in this stuff. But if I had to choose I'd rather tackle a floor pan. Dealing with heater channels can seriously compromise the integrity of the shell.
