Screaming Speedo
Can someone re-post the info regarding how to fix a screaming speedometer? There was a thread that was posted underneath one of the Georgia VW businesses forums that gave great instructions for this, but it seems to be gone now.
My speedometer has started doing this even worse now, and I need to fix it.
Thanks,
-Jon

Re: Screaming Speedo
Mine was doing the same thing on the ridiculously cold mornings we had. Following the recommendation of a longtime Vw repair guy I know (and trust) I detatched the cable from the back of the speedo, and let the oil (NOT GREASE!) run down into the speedo cable. I used a penetrating type oil like you would use on rusty stuff to loosen it.I've never had any trouble since. The previous posting you mentioned said to not use heavier greases because it will collect in the speedo itself and muck things up. This should do the trick!

Ok, thanks. That helps a lot.

Re: Screaming Speedo
I did exactly as you said where you let the oil run down to the cable and it seems to have worked. If it does it again, I'll just remove the cable completely and grease the entire cable and put it back together.
Thanks again!

Re: Screaming Speedo
You shouldn't have to remove it- the penetrating oil will distribute itself around. One shot did the trick for mine.

That's exactly what I did, and so far, it seems that spraying the penetrating oil has fixed the screaming.
I'm just saying that if by some chance it starts making the noises again, I'll take the whole cable out of the tube, lube the whole cable, and then re-install it in the tube and see if that will fix the issue. But, I'll only do this if it starts the screaming again.

Re: Screaming Speedo
The whole reason you put oil in the cable is so it will work its way up into the speedo, it's the speedo making that noise, metal on metal. Oiling the cable is just an easy way to avoid needing your speedo rebuilt. If the screaming doesn't go away you need the shaft inside the speedo resized and re-lubed.
