floor pans Empty floor pans

Post by bigdog1 Mon Jan 19, 2009 3:53 pm

When replacing rusted floor pans ,which is the better way to fasten the new pans to the frame... weld , rivet or screw? I don't have access to a welding rig so I'm left with using rivets or screws . Anybody care to give their thoughts on this?

Thanks

I'm not sure if they charge hourly, legnth of weld or by job but you may find someone on here to get it done fairly cheap but if it gets close to the $250 side you could buy a welder and do it yourself. http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_200342925_200342925

I am currently working on a complete pan replacement. My passenger side pan had been replace by a body shop that the previous owner hired. The body shop in all there wisdom installed the pan with two tack-welds and what looks like roofing compound. I was able to remove the pan with one swift kick. Oh and one more thing. The seat guides were mounted using six pop rivets which had pulled out and left the car without a passenger seat.

The best way to install your pans would be to remove the old pans, grind the center channel lip clean and smooth, tightly fit your pan to the channel. This may take a little more grinding. Then Tack weld the pan in with a tack every inch. Once done apply a nice coating of seam sealer where the pan meets the channel. Don't forget when tacking the pan first put a tack down every 12 inches then come back and do it every 6 inches, then every 3 then 1 . This will keep the pan from bowing and getting out of alignment.

Buy the way call around to welding supply companies. some of them will let you rent a Mig welder.

Northside Tool Rental in Norcross has a 90 amp 110V Mig welder setup for Flux Core wire. They are asking $30.16 per day to rent it.

You never know, you might could get a muffler shop to weld them, that's what they do is weld exhaust pipes and mufflers all day, plus they have the lifts to work under.
