MSD or Bosch 019 Empty MSD or Bosch 019

Post by Jon65 Thu Nov 22, 2012 9:07 pm

Hi, I'm looking for opinions on what type of ignition system to use. I have looked at the 019s that are sold by Glenn Ring and were interested in the quality of them, however, today my uncle who has worked on muscle cars in the past told me that I should get a MSD distributor with the 6A ignition box. He said that it should make it run better and more reliably. Just to note, I'm perfectly fine with the maintenance of the points ignition system so that isn't a problem. I just wanted to ask if any of you had an opinion on the subject.

Any insight is appreciated.
Thanks,
Jon65

Oh, forgot.

My engine is a 1641cc single port engine with dual 34 ict weber carbs, and has a single quietpack exhaust.

MSD is total overkill for your engine.
I was running a generic 009 with a Pertronix unit and recently switched to a Glenn Ring 010 and I'm very happy on my modded 1700cc.

Thanks for your advice.

Yeah, that's what I thought about the MSD too. So, Glenn's refurbished distributors are that good?

Magna spark from CB Performance with bosch blue coil and matching set of wires. I like to set at 28 degrees max indicated around 3000 rpm works best with dual carb motors. This your ticket for the money its solid state and ready to hate http://www.cbperformance.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=2008 I stock them and rockm in all my motors

I have an 019 that I love and it is the bomb with a petronix (electrical insert).
I am planning on putting it in the Buggy (1600 SP) when I get a chance.

Post by Jon65 Fri Nov 23, 2012 10:25 pm

Update:

Well, I'm gonna have to redirect this thread. I just found out today that my dual ICT's are shot. So, as of this point my only option is to go back to a stock single carb. Exactly which type of stock carb I'm gonna have to use will be determined by which of my spare carbs that I have lying around can be rebuilt.

So now I need advice on which distributor to use with the carb that I use.

I will update when I figure out which carb I end up using.

I run 009s but I've heard nothing but good things about the 019. Only good things can come from a dude named Glenn. Laughing

Post by Jon65 Mon Dec 03, 2012 12:36 pm

Ok, so now I have conerted my car back to a single H30/31 carb. After thinking about it, I have decided to go with the 019 whenever I get a chance to talk to Glenn about it. So thanks to all of you guys that replied and helped my out. cheers

Now my final question is, can I use a 019 in conjunction with the H30/31?

Any insight is appreciated.
Thanks.

Forgive me, but I misunderstood your post. Are you saying that it would be a waste of time for a 019, or I shouldn't wait to buy a 019?

Sorry.

Last I checked for a fully refurbished Bosch 019 was about $250. But they are said to be of the best quality distributors available.

Just for future reference this does not work.
I tried a 205J vacuum advance this way in the balance tube for the Kadrons that I installed on the '63 beetle I had.
The vacuum signal is exactly backwards for this application post venturi (cross over balance tube area), the area of the balance tube has high vacuum with closed throttle and little to no vacuum with a WOT environment. This is exactly backwards to what the vacuum can needs on the disto.
Just an FYI, I know that this thread has taken a different turn, but someone may look this up and attempt it based off the previous post.
Thanks,
