Parts/Spares shopping trip
If anyone is interested, I am planning a trip either Saturday Dec. 6th or Saturday Dec. 13th to two VW wrecking yards in eastern Alabama. Y'all are welcome to tag along with us, we can meet along the way for you to join up.
First stop will be Merrill's on the Ga./Al. border for a raid. Then on to Don's Buggy Stuff between Hokes Bluff and Piedmont, both stops on US 278.
Don's has exclusively VW parts both new (gaskets to stroker cranks) and used with many ACVW's on the property to pull parts from, Merrill's is strictly a wrecking yard (mixed foreign brands, plenty of ACVW's and accessories) with historically fair prices.
Post here or PM if you are interested or want specific information.

Re: Parts/Spares shopping trip
I found out that Merrill's yard is closed on Saturdays, so we are going to Alabama on Friday December 12th, leaving Cartersville around 8:00am. We should be back in Georgia by early afternoon.
If we can meet any of you in Dallas or Cedartown on our way through Georgia reply with a meeting place.
Jeff

Re: Parts/Spares shopping trip
I made the trip Friday, and had to go solo. By doing that I had to keep all the treasures for myself. Merrill's was especially nice, they were willing to move some parts! My roof rack came in handy. I even came back with a bit of cash left over.
I'll let y'all know when I go treasure huntin' again.

Re: Parts/Spares shopping trip
I had a great time at Merrill's. I got to chat with the owner, he is now 89 years old, still in the office behind his desk. Business was slow Friday, and I must have caught him in a generous mood. Kindness, respect and manners and a willingness to while away an hour while Mr. Merrill told me all about his kids and grand/great grand kids payed dividends.
His youngest son and sole employee (age 65) accompanied me into the yard. These guys have the largest stash of split/bay buses I have seen in this region.
I did get his only Empi steering wheel, minus the horn button, Jerome!
Merry Christmas to you, man.

Looking at heading up your way one weekend to take the wifey out to eat, either the Fruit Jar (heard they have an awesome c-fried steak) or a place called three way??? Heard its a good greasy dive, will have to see where its at. Maybe you and the wife can join us when we come up. We can talk Vw's and the wives can laugh and point fingers!
If not before Christmas, you guys have a great one, and remember the reason for the season!!!!
Re: Parts/Spares shopping trip
Just give some notice before you arrive and we can meet up for a meal.
Fruit Jar is east of I-75 at exit 290 on the right. The Four Way Lunch is at Main & Tennessee St. downtown, and open from 6 am till 3 pm.
Talk to you soon...
