1954 sunroof with semaphores
hello everyone, im new on the site, and am looking for others who love vw's as much as i do. i have had 2 and a half bugs in the past, all sedans, a 1974, 1964, and 1963 sunroof body (thats the half), and now im the proud owner of a 1954. i got it for a song, and its a complete car, plus the guy i bought it from is an old aircooled guy too, he has a collection to drool over. he is the one that vw approached to use one of his restored ovals to set side by side with the "new" beetle when they first introduced them. his office is full of vw show trophies, pics of his dubs, and two articles from vw trends showing two of his cars that were featured in the past. back to my car, its a '54 oval, sunroof, with semaphores, and even has the "heart" tail lights, mr stewart (the vw man in my opinion, and one who sold me the car) has the paperwork from vw showing its an all numbers matching bug. it hasnt been on the road in about 30 years, but im looking forward to working on it and driving it to its first show. im in the lagrange georgia area, and looking forward to meeting others who share my same affliction. take care everyone.

the last time i talked to him he said he didnt mind if anyone stopped by his business or called him there, hes a real nice guy and fun to talk to. his place is called economy used cars, in manchester ga, on broad street at second street. idk if he has anything else hes looking to sell, but it never hurts to ask.

Re: 1954 sunroof with semaphores
its been a while since ive posted about my bug. so far ive got a mountain of parts that will tune her up, rebuild her brakes, and get her running again, i also picked up some 2 1/2 drop spindles from cip1. next is to find some affordable tires, id like smaller up front, going for that old school "big-n-little" look, anyone know any good tire size combo's i should consider? my plan is to get her running and driving, weld up some of the holes in her, 'glass the holes in the rear pan half's, and ride out. my goal is to definately show her at the next vw show planned at west georgia commons mall in lagrange, since im only about 5 minutes from there. id like to thank lindy herrell and his son for all the good deals on parts and advice so far. looking forward to seeing some of yall out and about.

Re: 1954 sunroof with semaphores
Tire sizes really depend on the look you're going for and how low the car is going to sit. What type of driving style you have is something to consider. For the super low car such as Bertha and Jolene, the tire sizes are 145/65R15 for the front and the rear is 185/65R15. There is some of the other rides that are lowered that run a 135 or 145SR15 for the front then those that like to have a little more footprint on the road that run a 175/55R15 for the front. Look through the cars in the members rides section or under the Baker Kustoms (projects) section and see what fits your look.

I'm running 165/50/15 in Front with 195/60/15 out back on my Single Cab,
And ran 165/45/15 and 205/60/15 on my Oval..
But like Tim said see what fits your look..

Re: 1954 sunroof with semaphores
im gonna run the stock wheels for a while cause cops dont make alot of money, im planning on a set of brm's eventually. since ive got the drop spindles, im interested in a tire size that will help lower the front end just a little bit more (on the stock '54 steel wheel) and ill probally just stay close to factory size on the rear so as to not mess with the gearing too much, im also gonna keep it a 6volt system, i know 12 is better, but ive got a little bit of purist in me, and i think it will help the ole girl stand out a little bit more from the crowd.
ive tried uploading some pics of her but i cant seem to figure it out, id really like to get some up on here and see what everyone thinks of the car, since everyone here knows and respects the 'wagen more than the average joe out there. i can email pics to anyone interested, just hit me up stratocaster72@hotmail.com have a merry christmas everyone.

Re: 1954 sunroof with semaphores
BRMs are cheap right now, I payed well over $100 bucs each for my BRMs. If you are going Flat4 then yes they are more money. But for a repro of a BRM they run as low as $79ea.

I ordered mines from Kustom1Warehouse.net and I paid $340 (total of $418 with the shipping) for a set of Empi BRM's with caps, bolts and valve stems included!! That's the best deal I've seen anywhere. For tires you can check out Onlinetires.com. Picked up a pair of Federal Formoza 165/45/15's for $51.25ea and 195/55/15's for $64.85ea.
