Re: just another day in paradise
hope you atleast have enough to get some gas . as long as you have some gas, the rest of that won't keep you off the road. unless its raining, but hell, rain X will take care of that, hahaha.
I haven't had an E-brake in over 2 years. my problem is the cab;e broke, and i've just been to lazy to fix it . and as far as brakes go.......... i have no idea, i haven't checked them in a while. as long as they are still sorta stopping, i'm fine. I can still lock up the wheels, well most of them anyway (that damn rear drivers just doesn't want to work, and i've replaced the hoses, brakes, hardware, W/C, and the friggin drum. the only thing i haven't replaced was the backing plate, lol).

Re: just another day in paradise
Don't forget to lube those wiper shafts with 3in 1 oil everyso often. It is on the general maintenance schedule to do like 2 time a year. Well after not being done for 23 years, mine locked up and I had to drive the last 3 miles to the house in a torrential down poor with no wipers. This was last year and they did speed up from glacier slow and really slow as the 2 speeds. Now they are just painfully slow and slow, but they work.

Re: just another day in paradise
Really easy to do. Just take off the arm and put some oil on the shaft where it goes through the bushing. I used the inner rounded section of the vice grips to lock down on the tappered surface under the threaded part on the end of the rod, (of course mine were locked up so I had to "Pursuade" them to move. did all this while the motor was on lowest speed. after about 2 minutes, they were working like they should. (slow still, but working well enough...)
You may not need to monkey arm the shafts like I did, but it might held if they stick in the up position.
Good luck, Also remember to pop off those little rubber stoppers off the top of the door hinges and oil the hinges as well, might as well do it why you have the 3 in 1 out.

Re: just another day in paradise
I haven't oiled mine since i bought it (3 years ago), and i doubt the PO did either. but i'm not going to, because a while ago when we got that bad snowfall (bout 2 years ago), my drivers side wiper arm stopped moving. turns out the splines on the shaft rounded off, and didn't grip the arm. all that heavy snow that was building up on the windshield must have done it. well i used a wrench and tightened the hell out of it, and haven't had a problem since. buts its one of those things that if i take it apart, i'll have to replace the arm, and i really don't want to do that, lol.

Re: just another day in paradise
I like it. The hardest thing is that no one around here has ever worked on one so there isn't a vast pool of knowledge. I have figured out most of the problems that poped up in the begining. It seemed like the 1st 3-4 months I spent fixing and adjusting the screw ups of the PO's attempts to get it shifting again. I had to replace the servo and reset all the adjustments to factory settings, but that wasn't hard. Finding out what the factory settings were was kind of a pain.
Drivability is good, it takes about 1 second to shift gears in the automatic if you want. It is basically a 3 spd gear box with a 36 hp sized clutch and disk and a torque converter hooked to it. If I decide to "leave the line" with a simularly loaded and HP'ed 4 spd beetle I am just a little slower off the line because I load up a TQ Convt. to move. The upside is I generally can hang with them if I decide to shift throught the 3 gears. If I don't feel like shifting and it is realitvely smooth to a slight hill I'll start out in high. The off the line speeds are SLOW, but I do not have to shift, I just stay in high!
The other thing that is great is that the final drive ratio on autosticks made after 1971 is higher than a stock 4 spd. So It "feels right" at about 80 on the interstate.
Another thing is that about 1/4 of the Autosticks made were Posi-traction rear ends. Mine isn't, but I have a 1969 (lower speeded) Auto trannie that is supposed to be.
I hope that this helps. For more info visit www.VWAR.org Autostick specific website.
