raising rear end (the car)

I'd like to raise the rear end of my 72 sedan an inch or two and don't really want to mess with the torsion bar, really I'm afraid to mess with the t bar. I was wondering if they sell those type shocks with the helper springs for vw's or how hard is it to drop the front end a couple inchs

I know empi sells those coil over shocks and they will lift the car but usually they ride pretty stiff.

Re-indexing the springplates is not that hard and after turning so many splines each way you get back to where you started.  Just mark the housing and springplate in the unloaded position to know where you started.  

As far as lowering the front if it is a regular beetle you could install 2.5" drop spindles or install adjusters in the beam.  If it is a Super beetle you could put on lowered springs or buy adjustable struts.

the vert I have I think the torsion bars were adjusted before I bought it but I have never seen it done and just a little scared of them, might try utube

Just be aware that those shocks will ride VERY stiff.
I have a set on the Ghia Vert because of the natural sag in the rear end and to even it up (1.5" on one side and 2" on the other).
If you run over any thing you will get Jarred. They are super stiff.

Springplates aren't really hard to adjust, but will take some time doing them your first go around. Best to have new bushings already in hand before starting. The first time I did mine, I pulled everything apart and a few of the old bushings were nothing but dust, so I had to wait on new ones. You may not need them, but they don't cost much either so it won't hurt to go on and buy them.

I remember there was a YouTube video of somebody doing the springplates on a squareback a while back that was helpful the first time I did mine.

On my old '71 RHD 1302 I had as well as my current '69 Ghia I have dual arms on each side. They are a little different to get off, but the concept is easy when you have looked at the Youtube videos. I like having a small roll around floor jack to take the load off when you are pulling the arms out, then you can relieve the pressure gradually.

X2 on the new busings, the ones in the Ghia are deteriorated.
