1968 Allison Daytona Dune Buggy
Look what landed on my trailer today! I picked up an Allison Daytona Dune Buggy from South Georgia today. It is on a 1968 pan. Has the original gel coat paint job that is sun faded. I hope I can find a product to make it shine again. Let me know what you guys use to bring fiberglass back to life. The floor pans look like swiss cheese and the seats and top need to be reupholstered. The motor supposedly runs but smoked really bad. I can't wait to get started on this buggy. I have to finish a 69 Baja before I can touch this one. . Here are a few photos I took of it today.

Nice! Nice! Nice!
I am glad to have another Allison in the bunch!
The wheels on the front are the originals, mine has 13's in the front and 14's in the back, direct 4 X 130 pattern.

There is supposed to be an all buggy show in Birmingham this summer.Vedubauman wrote:Nice! I've got two in the garage right now. Wanted a third one but no room. Congrats!
Any interest on your end?
The organizers are going to try to get all the Allisons together at this show.
LMK and I'll pass on the information as I get it.

Feel free to pass the information on to me. I doubt I will have my Allison on the road by then but I would love to go to the show to get some ideas.

That thing is awesome! I love that paint job! I'd keep it just like that and just clean it up

I got them out today for a nice family photo. It looks like the Allison will fit in just fine. A couple siblings weren't able to make the photo today...

Re: 1968 Allison Daytona Dune Buggy
I couldn't resist… I pushed the Baja to the side and decided to start restoring my Allison buggy. I can’t wait to get this thing on the road for summer. I would love to bring it to Reynolds, Ga but I’m not sure it will be done by March 10th. I have been working really hard on it the past four days. Luckily, I don’t live that far away from Bug-eyed so I was able to pick up all the parts I needed for really good prices. I decided to do a complete rebuild of all the pan components. Ball joints, brakes, tie rods, floor pans, etc. Here are some pictures of the progress I made the last four days.
After I removed the body, I found money and a fake gold ring. I wish it was real
Short Floor pans can get a little tricky
I can't wait to start on the drivers side

Looking good! Be thankful yours didn't have a fiberglass gas tank like mine did built into the body!

Re: 1968 Allison Daytona Dune Buggy
I got the passenger side completely welded in tonight! I was also able to cut out the driver’s side floor pan. I ordered some Por-15 to coat the pans and it should be in this weekend. I’m waiting for bug-eyed to get the drivers floor pans back in stock. They should be in tomorrow or Friday. I can’t wait to finish up these floorboards. On a side note, I finally got around to replacing the cracked windshield in my 73 bug tonight. I drove it to work this morning and noticed that the small crack had really started to spread.

Re: 1968 Allison Daytona Dune Buggy
The other floor pan didn't come in this weekend. I hope it will be here on Monday. I was able to start sandblasting the pan and started to remove tierods and ball joints.

I am right there with you. Spent all afternoon blasting on the double. In retrospect it would have been al lot easier to have it blasted. Where is the fun in that! Looks great. Keep the updates coming.

Re: 1968 Allison Daytona Dune Buggy
I went out to Bug-eyed and picked up the driver’s side floor pan today. I got it cut and tack welded in place. I am going to completely weld it in tomorrow. I was able to pull the frontend and transmission off the pan. This will make it a lot easier to move it around and flip it over for more sandblasting and paint.

Nice!
When you get ready to do a top for it, let me know I have an original at my disposal for measurments.
If we have hippy brown do two of them for us we might be able to get a discount.

I also have the original top and side windows all intact to go by. My mom is really good when it comes to a sewing machine. She did all the seats for my bus and also did the camper top canvas with windows. My parents have a ski boat from the 70's that she mad the top for. The boat top is almost identical to an Allison top. She told me she felt confident she could make me one. I want to get it on the road before I have her start on a top and back seat.
ASBug: On your Allison what size battery do you have in the battery compartment under the back seat?

Re: 1968 Allison Daytona Dune Buggy
I'll check the battery.
I do not own a top, but have access to one to measure.
Find out what your mom would charge me to make one for Big Al.
Are you doing the sides, the whole nine yards?
I am thinking white, but I know it will be nasty after one year...
The other choice is a tan color for me.
What color are you going to do?
