carb problem?
so yesterday i started noticing a little stumble. I checked all the usual-timing/points etc..
Then i noticed a hissing from the carb. I took off the air cleaner and noticed it was coming from the around the tube that goes into the upper body from the bowl.
Looks like gas is bubbling through around the tube.
Could this be my problem? any good fixes?
thanks

Re: carb problem?
Your needle and seat valve is dirty or the float is cracked and filling with fuel?. You can pull the top off of the carb and clean out the valve or I recommend to rebuild the carb. A filter between the fuel pump and the carb will keep foreign debris from getting stuck in the needle and seat valve in the future. I use two filters , one between the fuel line and fuel pump and another between the pump and carb.

Re: carb problem?
I will never run a fuel filter between the fuel pump and carb again. That extra strain from the weight of the filter/fuel works on the brass inlet tube for the carb. It can come off and spray fuel all over your hot engine that will continue to run for a short time on the fuel in the carb. Poof!!! Yes, this is the voice of experience talking. It's pretty spectacular to open the decklid and see the entire engine compartment on fire. It's a lot cheaper to rebuild a carb for some dirt than replace a car. If you want to anyways, find a way to support the weight of the filter.

One word, Safety Wire!. Well two.
Re: carb problem?
Well done. 7-10 twists per inch even! If you drill a hole in your screw you would be safetied in the wrong direction. Always pul to the tight side. It looks like you have it looped around so it really doesnt matter. Safety wire and cotter key aren't just for racers and aircraft. We can all benefit from a little lockwire. That said.....whay not put the filter before the pump? If the pump has been on there long enough the shed a diaphragm seal then chances are the carb has been there for a hot minute as well, and should probably be torn down. Carb dip is awesome ...just don't put the top on the can tight.

Above pic was taken form The Samba.
I have not done this to my stuff yet. I plan on it. Stainless Wire?

Re: carb problem?
Absolutely. Worst cast if you can't find it local Aircraft Spruce East is out in peachtree city. .032 is about the most common. Works good, lasts a long time. Use the needle nose to twist the pigtail in so you don't get poked.

Re: carb problem?
We lost the whole top of the engine and wiring harness to a fire caused by that EXACT reason. We knew not to put a filter between the pump and the carb, but I guess the owner before us didn't and that brass tube pulled right out of the carb with NO warning. Car ran fine while the bowl emptied, and the pump kept a spraying raw gas towards the #1 cylinder until it found something hot enought to set it ablaze. Nothing sicker than to see the black smoke broiling up out of that deck lid.
That afternoon, a fire extinguisher was the first item purchased in the rebuild.

Clamps, fire extinguisher, and brakes are the first things I do to all my VWs. I always reroute my fuel lines and never run a filter between the carb and the fuel pump.
