Re: 66 Camper Bus "Bocephus"
I heard train and rooster noises coming from your Bus when we were up in Cherokee.
Re: 66 Camper Bus "Bocephus"
We tried to keep quiet. I don't see how you could have heard those, you had your portable tv turned up to 11 watching your Pokemon cartoons.

Re: 66 Camper Bus "Bocephus"
Got my new muffler installed and started working on fixing my hacked bumper. I have no idea what whoever did this was thinking. They only needed to cut two small holes for the beetle exhaust to fit, but they went ahead and chopped two giant rectangles about 9 inches long .
I bought the donor bumper from pull-a-part since the contour was pretty close to my bumper and used it for donor metal.
Passenger side came out pretty good, drivers side could have been better, but oh well.
Also been getting started on the roof cutting some new wood bows and test fitting a sample piece. The front roof panel over the cargo area should be pretty easy since it's all one width, but the rear panel gets narrower as it goes towards the rear, so it may be a bit tricky.
Picked up a vented fresh air box cover off the samba as well. I like my deflectors on the side, but they only throw air right on top of your head. These guys should put some air on my face. Kinda ugly and not stock looking, but it's easy to install/swap, so I'll probably just run it in the hottest of months.
Also got my stickers installed.

Who knows! I guess one day down the road, somebody will find the bumper I used for donor metal and say "man, this would have been a great bay window bumper if some idiot hadn't cut chunks of metal out of it"

Do you still have the bay bumper you cut? I need two early bay rear bumper mounting brackets.

Sorry Jon, I've already promised the remnants to somebody. If he doesn't want/need the brackets, you can have them. He doesn't have a bumper currently though, so I'm guessing he'll need them.

Re: 66 Camper Bus "Bocephus"
Finally got the bumper put back together and installed. Also spraybombed the replacement rear apron to "kinda" match the red color of the bus.

Re: 66 Camper Bus "Bocephus"
So how does it sound and did that little tail pipe hurt the power? Looks good man.
Re: 66 Camper Bus "Bocephus"
Sounds pretty much the same as the stock beetle exhaust that was on there. Haven't driven it farther than the driveway yet , so I can't tell you anything about power.

Re: 66 Camper Bus "Bocephus"
^Thanks guys!
I've gotten a little bit closer to being finished with the headliner. Got my panels polyurethaned front and back. Installed some peel n' seal strips (poor mans dynomat) to the roof and then put up the foil back bubble insulation stuff. These made a huge difference to the sound of the roof! Tapping on the roof now just produces a solid thud, whereas it used to produce a resonating sound like hitting a gong. Should make camping in the rain (or under trees that drop acorns) much more pleasant.
Still need to cut the strips to cover the front and rear seams. They'll look like this (bus I saw at Bulli):
After that, I'll just have to make a panel to cover the rear, kind of like a shortened headbanger cabinet. I don't want a full headbanger as I like being able to sit up on the bed. Just wanting something long enough to cover the hinges and hide where the rear headliner panel ends.
Then it'll be time to recover the closet with birch!

Re: 66 Camper Bus "Bocephus"
It does look very good. Maybe you should be doing extra sets of roof panels to get even better at them.
You camp in the rain?? I thought rabid Racoon watchers avoided rain.

Awesome Eric. Those Racoons can walk all over the roof and you'll never know it! Well the big goons that plant food on the roof!
You know who you are

Never heard of such a thing. I would never come up with something like that.rpm750 wrote:Awesome Eric. Those Racoons can walk all over the roof and you'll never know it! Well the big goons that plant food on the roof!

Re: 66 Camper Bus "Bocephus"
Haha, yeah, I doubt I'd hear the "racoons" now. And Phillip, the roof panels actually ended up being alot easier than I had planned. The real problem is just finding the wood.

Re: 66 Camper Bus "Bocephus"
Thanks Mike! Give me a wave if you see me around town.
Had a little down time over new years break, so I got my seam strips for the roof cut and rounded the edges with a router, then polyurethaned and installed them. Nice to have the bus back to a state where I can jump in and drive it. It's been a disaster zone the last few weeks with wood scraps, saw dust, and insulation material covering the lower 2 feet of cargo area! Next up, recover the closet.
