Stillgruven Our "new" 1967 Bug
A one owner car last tagged in 1998. Just liberated from its parking space next to an out building this bug will be our new fun project.
The first impressions are that this bug is in much better shape than most we have seen. There is some rust in the usual spots - battery tray, rear package shelf, and bottoms of the doors. We will know more after we have vacuumed out all of the debris and removed the flooring. There are some cool Happy Bug floor mats. The carpet seems good. It will need a closer look.
There is exterior surface rust on the roof. The car has been repainted at least once and it looks as if the painters took better than average care in prepping the car. We will more than likely just stop any active rust and preserve the "Old Car Look".
The front seats have two layers of seat covers. They appear to be 1968 seats. There is a box from West Coast Metric that has new upholstery for the front seats and back bench. Headliner may be salvageable. Typical water stains around windows. The door cards and rear side panel trim need repair.
The interior paint looks good and original. There is an aftermarket radio, Not sure if the dash has been cut.
The car has not been started in at least 5 years. There is 30,000 showing on the OD. Fairly sure it is 130 and not 23 or higher. Aside from a few missing heat and pre heat lines the engine compartment is complete and original. There was a leak of gear oil from the transaxle when the car was tilted to one side while changing tires. We will try to start the engine after coating the cylinders with Marvel's Mystery Oil. Of course the gas tank and fuel lines will need to be flushed an/or replaced.
The brakes will need a complete overhaul. No brakes at this time! We will keep it stock when doing the rebuild.
After the cars stops and runs we will check the transmission and clutch. Any repairs will be done to stock specs.
There is no time schedule for this project other than to get it on the road as quickly as possible!
Please follow our prgress! I am sure that we will need your experience and input to make this a success.
I have pics but have to wait 7 days (?) to post them!!!
Thanks,
Michael, Chrissy and Emily

Sounds like a great project! Hopefully it will crank right up, and you can get the brakes squared away and back on the road shortly.
If you have pics, you can upload them to photobucket or any other photo hosting site and post them here. No need to wait 7 days. Unfortunately, the image gallery on this site is currently at max capacity.

I appreciate the edit!
My daughter and I are headed outside to begin the cleaning.
I should be able to send more pics of the pans and any other areas of interest.
Are there any local VW shops anymore or has everything gone to the internet? I need new rubber for the windows, some wheels and everything to rebuild the brakes.
Thanks!

Re: Stillgruven Our "new" 1967 Bug
It's Alive!!!
After cleaning the windows and vacuuming up all of the loose rust and debris I decided to see if the car would run. I pulled the plugs and put in some Marvel Mystery oil and turned the motor over by hand for a few minutes. I re installed the plugs and connected the fuel pump to a 1 gallon gas can with some 2 stroke fuel I use for my KT-100 go kart. I set the choke and poured a little fuel in the carb and the car started right up!
It would not stay running though. I covered the carb a few times trying to have the engine clear the carb with vacuum but that did not help. The engine will only run if I am covering the carb intake by 25%. Maybe the 2 stroke gas is too lean for the car?
I'd really like to drive the car to the event on Saturday. Does anyone have a known good carb I could buy or use until I get mine rebuilt?
On a good note - the gas tank looks like new. There is no rust inside and it looks as if the tank was drained before the car was parked for its long nap.
The floor pans are rusted through just in front of the rear seats. The rear parcel shelf has a bunch of holes too. It all looks easy to fix.
I will have pics tomorrow.
Where in Sugar Hill is the meet?

Re: Stillgruven Our "new" 1967 Bug
I rebuilt a '67 Beetle that had been sitting for a bunch of years, you can just about count on replacing anything that brake fluid touches- master cylinder, wheel cylinders, brake lines, brake hoses, etc.

We've got enough '67 on the forums lately to have a '67 only show.

Looks like it spent some time in Macon. Stratford is a school in North Macon. Mercer is the big college here.

Re: Stillgruven Our "new" 1967 Bug
Hello jshmnghm,
Yes the bug was found near Macon. Originally purchased in Alabama, it was brought to Macon where the sons of the owner drove it to High School and College.
I did get it running on Sunday. Too late for the car show though. The car has some weird characteristics. It will surge then drop off on the RPMs when starting in first and shifting to 2nd. I am thinking that I need to adjust the accelerator pump. I thought I heard some pinging in 4th gear so I will check the timing. Any guidelines on setting the timing? No vacuum advance on the dizzy. Does that mean a 009? I am thinking 32 degrees at full throttle but since there are no timing marks on the case I am not sure how to set it.
The transmission will also pop out of 4th gear. I have a bungee cord ready but am looking for a long term fix. Anyone have a good used transmission?
The car drives well. I know that the steering linkage has a bad ball joint. It is the one that attaches to the steering dampner. The car drives well probably due to the tremendous toe out!
Almost drove the car on my commute. 42 miles one way. Thought better of it though. I am not interested in breaking down on the top end in the dark!
The last VW I had was a 67 bus. It caught fire near riverside on 285 WB on a rainy Friday afternoon. It has taken me more than 10 years to get over that loss!
I have not done anything with the exterior so no new pics.
Keep the rubber side down!

Re: Stillgruven Our "new" 1967 Bug
Hey Grifspop,
You called it. Master cylinder, flexible lines to the master cylinder, all four brake cylinders and all shoes. The original stuff was seized and gummy. Thankfully the shoes crumbled upon towing instead of breaking and locking up the drums when I towed the car.
Add a new metal fuel line in the engine bay and a rebuilt carb along with new flexible fuel lines.
Nothing unexpected except the transmission falling out of 4th gear.

Thanks-
Check the flexible lines to the wheel cylinders, they look good on the outside, but they swell up and pass very little fluid when they become constricted. Best of luck getting your '67 to daily driver status!!

Re: Stillgruven Our "new" 1967 Bug
Hello Grifspop,
I have the replacement lines. I will save them for another day. The brakes seem to work well. Of course it takes some adjustment on my part coming from a Subaru STi. I have to plan my stops and be more defensive.
The transmission is my main concern now.
