Tires rubbing on inside fender on hard left turn Empty Tires rubbing on inside fender on hard left turn

Post by peregrine67 Tue Oct 04, 2011 4:31 pm

My 67 Beetle is running at stock height and stock size tires. When I turn all the way to the left my left tire rubs on the inside of the wheel well. It doesn't happen on the right side. When I looked at the bean I noticed a block with and adjusting screw that stops it from going to far to the right. But i didn't see one on the left. is there supposed to be one on the left? If not any ideas why I'd be rubbing?

Zabo is probably right. Just need to adjust the toe in/out then if it doesn't have that bolt in place for the limit. just find one like the other and install it.

I see the bolt and the bracket that limits turning to the right but I don't see where I'd even put one for the left side.

Count the turn on the steering wheel lock to lock then back up half that amount to ensure you're in the center and check the wheels and see if they are pointing straight ahead. I'll bet the left wheel is pointing outboard a little. If so, adjust the toe until it's straight. You can pull a tape across the tires at the leading edge and the trailing edge. Be sure to measure at the same point on the tire. You should be looking for about 1/8 inch of toe in.

Also check the amount of turns on the steering box.when you put the body back on the steering box could have been off a turn more one way.you can disconnect the steering at the coupler and turn back and forth to find the center, then reconnect the shaft.don't worry about the steering wheel being off as long as lock to lock your steering is right.then pull the steering wheel off and mount it back in the right place if needed.hope this helps.

Fixed it. I couldn't believe how easy it was. I just wasn't seeing that second stop nut before.
I measured the toe-in and a little less than 1/8".

Thanks for all the helpfully advice.
