the Ratty Fatty Empty the Ratty Fatty

Post by callahan Wed Feb 09, 2011 10:36 pm

just got home with a new project its a 71 fatty
overall it is in great shape, super solid pans with undercoating still on it there is basically no rust on the car and other than passenger rear fender it is super straight, cheesy dark red respray, complete clean black interior sans the headliner. looking for some 65 or 66 black lowbacks if anyone knows of any please let me know. other than the bumpers its got all its parts, and should be a pretty straight forward put her back together and roll it project. also got a good sp engine for it. gonna start digging into it tomorrow

here's some stuff i need lmk if you can hook me up:
bumpers, running boards, body trim, plastic vents behind windows, black low back seats, dual mount antenna, more will be added as i get more into it

here's what i'm thinking about right now not really sure if i'm going to try to paint it yet

Unless you plan on changing the seat tracks on the pan or using the bottoms from the seats that are in there with the backs of the low backs then low backs wont fit.....you could always cut the high backs down into lowbacks though

that's what i was thinking...i have cut down a couple of sets of high backs,VW made it easy to turn these atrocities into some cool seats!! you can also run newer model VWseats, rabbit, jetta, etc.. early rabbit seats are pretty much direct fit. if you get a set with removable headrest...presto...lowbacks. can't wait to see it done...i like fat chicks!

i was thinking about just changing the seat backs, i thought about cutting them down too but i'd rather swap the backs before i hack up the nice ones that are in there

While you are there, ask Tim about off set wheels that will fit with your lowered front end.
I had to run the T-backs, in that the Rivis and the Empi 8's had too much offset to run on the lowered front. I have the Empi set up all the way down. I am running 145 65 15's.
I also did a Disc brake conversion and I think it moved the wheels out a little.

I'm running some chrome mangles with 145's on mine and it probably couldn't get much lower in the front!! Twisted Evil

the Ratty Fatty Newpaint the super in this pic sits @ 1" off the ground, it's running 165/45/15 on chrome mangels and was lowered by modifying the stock strut housing and running a Rabbit strut insert! like $30-$40 each for strut inserts and a little welding and it rides like a cadilac for a car this low.

yes the sp engine is out of a bus, and yep two jacks in the car along with a pile of other random stuff including some odd off road exhaust set up, and the golden nugget of the whole deal. . . an early 356 front brake set up, drum spindle and everything that should provide some nice funding for this project.
got the fender back on and all of the lights hooked back up and working gonna clean her out good tomorrow and take some more pics

and i think with stock wheels and 145/65s i should be able to go pretty low with no real issues, i've still got a while before i have to worry about that

slow progress on the fatty

engine all together and ready to go in but its binding up on something in the tranny and won't budge its only got another inch to go but idk what the deal is, its got late model flywheel, clutch, pressure plate, and correct t/o bearing the only thing i can think of is the clutch hanging up on the sleeve that sits around the input shaft

but still need a passenger side running board, the little plastic vents behind the quater windows, and the spacer that sits inside the outer grease seal between the bearing and brake drum on the rear end

and she'll be officially for sale as soon as she's up and running so if you like dirty ol fat chicks hit me up

engine is in! sort through the mess of wires tomorrow and hopefully fire it up

turned out the surface rust on the imput shaft was to blame so i realligned the clutch sanded down the input shaft threw a bit of grease on it and showed that engine who's boss

finished up the fatty today
painted wheels, bolted up front bumper fixed leaking tank to tunnel gas line and it fired right up, runs nice but with the 1200 and irs this thing is a slug! lol wouldn't be bad around town but anything other than that would just be annoying, need to button up a few more little things like heater tubes and stuff but other than that i'm done with this thing
