Opinion Poll: Bupack vs. Empi vs. Scat vs......
I'm looking to get some feedback from everyone on the brand of parts everyone prefers or have had experience with. Pro's and Con's between Bugpack, Empi, and Scat. Let's hear it. I'm doing some research and would like to hear from everyone. Thanks

it's hard to say, because they make so many parts, and some are good but some are junk. Are you talking engine, interior, suspension, or what?

I'm just saying in general. More or less on the items you would use the most of and want to last. Engine, suspension, brake components... Opinion on each one? more

Most of the stuff I have used from (the new) Empi has been very disappointing. Really never been disappointed with the Bugpack or Scat products. But as far as price goes, that is reflected in the quality.

I had an 8 doweled flywheel from SCAT that wouldn't mate with a crank that came in the same order directly from SCAT. In the future, I'll be using DPR or another company that dowels the two as a matched set, one set at a time. You get what you pay for....
I've seen empi ceramic coated exhaust rust up in about a year.
Those fancy SCAT serpentine belt kits burn up idler bearings, and they don't offer a replacement bearing seperately.
The SCAT swivel feet, ratio rockers, and rods are really good.
The 5 tab valve covers are pretty cool- don't need to use any sealer, but you'll need to tweak the bales 'cause they're way too tight out of the package.
Before you buy, talk to people who've used the same parts and see what they think.

If I had to rate them, I would put them in this order...
1. Scat
2. Bugpack
3. Empi
Lately there have been rumors running around that Empi has stepped up its game and they are trying to improve the porduct line. But generally I will avoid Empi if there is anything else available.

EMPI sucks period. i've had lots of EMPI stuff crap out on me before. their pulleys are extremely soft, and will pound out the center of the outer half, the'r dizzy caps stop working with in a month, their carbs suck ass, etc.
now, their old vintage stuff like from the 70's, is the shit. thats the best highest quality stuff around. but that was back when they gave a damn. If you come across some old NOS stuff, BUY IT, lol.

I know this is a old subject, but seen where clyde said he saw EMPI ceramic exhaust rust in a year.
Thought about a EMPI exhaust for my 74 Thing since EMPI makes one. The black steel goes for about $100, The ceramic goes for about $180.
Are the exhaust EMPI makes pretty bad or just have to be careful? trying to find justification for $180 compared to 350 or 400 from other places.
On my old beetle even good triple plated bumpers were starting to rust within a few months.. I thought that was bad.
thanks
ron

Re: Opinion Poll: Bupack vs. Empi vs. Scat vs......
You get what you pay for. I got a verbal quote from a "Jet Hot" dealer for around $300 to do a T1 header and single quiet pack about 2 years ago. That's just the coating, I had to send them the parts. Remember the exhaust gets to like 1000 degrees and cools to room temperature, and is subject to water splashing, and the coating has to stay on during all this. I was too cheap to do it:-(
If you just have fun with cars, get whatever's cheap . If you invest in your car, and never plan on selling it, do your research and buy what will satisfy you and last the longest.
Never heard a complaint about A1 headers:

I've run a crappy bugpack header for about 12 years. Have to paint it every time I pull the engine, and it stinks. My stainless steel muffler is amazing. $140 well spent, like 3-4 years ago.
