"The Idiot Book" (nickname) It's actually, "How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive: A Manual of Step-by-Step Procedures for the Compleat Idiot" by John Muir.

Bentley Manual

and you can search until the cows come home on www.thesamba.com

Good Luck and Welcome.

What model carb do you have? Lots of later cars run a 34pict3 so I'll throw this link out there just in case that is what you have.

This will tell you how to set the idle rpms, and get a proper mixture setting.

For general maintenance, I agree with Scott. The Idiot Book is great and a Bentley manual is great too.
