Re: 1973 German Look.....?
Pretty productive day.
Patched up a couple of holes in the drivers door that looked like they were for some sort of mirror or something. I didn't like them there so they are gone now.
Also finish sanded the steering wheel and primed it. Have a few more minor cracks that showed up after primer so I need to put a little spot glaze in there and final paint it tomorrow night.
Got one front fender sanded down and primed. Final sand and paint to come tomorrow hopefully.
Sanded and painted the gas tank. Under side is painted with the spray on bed liner and the top with gloss black.
And finally, got the ignition switch installed, installed the gas tank and fired it up.

great job- how bad was the steering wheel before you started?
Mines really bad with some big cracks so ive been hesitant about even attempting a repair

There were a couple of really big cracks in it and a few small ones. I just mixed up some body filler and pushed it into the cracks, sanded it down and put some self etching primer on it. A couple of more small cracks showed up after the primer that I will fill with some spot glaze as they are not much at all. The big cracks are gone after the primer, it looks really good. Can't wait to see it painted.
Re: 1973 German Look.....?
What kind/brand paint are you using on the body? Looks really nice, is it kind of a mat finish?

Dyslectic Herbie, that's funny I love it!
Re: 1973 German Look.....?
Fair amount of progress tonight. Welded another fender nut in. Only 1 more to go and then final cleanup of the fender nuts and the fenders can go on except for the pass front which I still have to do.
Drivers door in primer.
Drivers front finder painted.
Steering wheel painted.
And Drivers rear fender bolted on.

You should do that..that could be your new screen name.
Seriously, the car is looking good. Looking forward to seeing it in person
Re: 1973 German Look.....?
Or do a"73" instead of the "53", would have people guessing

Re: 1973 German Look.....?
Haven't updated in a while. Had family in town the last couple of days. I did get some work done though. Made it to the Pull-A-Part south today, they had 2 '73s listed in stock. WOW - both of them had the tops cut off, not a lot to salvage. They both had transmissions if anyone is interested in that. I got a lot of stuff though. I got a gas tank evap can, installed it in the car today. Also got a complete steering column, realy didn't want the whole thing just the turn signal/wiper switch that didn't have any cut wires like mine. Got some carpet for the rear wheel wells that looks real good, I'll paint it black so it matches the rest of the carpet I'm putting in. Got a bunch of nuts and bolts, a shifter (just in case I want to go OG and take out the scat), inside door handle trim and arm rests, the little gas peddle roller that I needed.
As for the car, my batteries are dead in the camera so no pics. But I do know have both rear fenders bolted on, figured out my tail lights and brake lights tonight and got them working(still trying to figure out the turn signals). Sprayed the bed liner on both rear fender wells. Need 1 more bolt and then I'll put the shocks on and get the car off of jack stands.
I have a problem with the steering wheel that I painted. It's an old style wheel which I realy wanted to use, but when I put it on with the turn signal and wiper lever it hits the wipre level. I could have swarn that the turn signal and wiper lever where on before I took off the wheel and it worked, but I'm not sure.
Will try and get batteries tomorrow so I can post update pics.

Re: 1973 German Look.....?
Got the rear shocks an, put the rear tires on and had to drive it. Drove it down the street with no hood, no deck lid, no front fenders, and no doors. But man was it fun to drive a bug again.
After the drive I got my drivers front fender bolted on. Sanded and primed the deck lid and sanded down the pass fender.
With having family in town this week I didn't get done what I really needed to get done so it doesn't look like I'm making Reynolds. Not giving up yet, I think I should have the fenders and doors on by then but the turn signals are going to be a problem.
