If you are wanting a rack correct to the time frame of your 71, you should look for one like this one on my 71:

The earlier style racks with the wood slats will work, they are just not time period correct. I just prefer to run the later style myself.

I have that same style on my '72. It has a part # sticker still on it. I'll get the #for you if you want it.
Be advised that the metal tube ones have this LOUD humm at 40-45 mph or so. you either need to put a bungee cord to remove the resonance or just learn to live with it (like me). Not really a problem unless you are in traffic that is going just about 43 MPH no more mo less for mine (happens about once every other month.)

Take care.

There also seems to be a height variable for weither there is a slidding rag top or not for each of these styles.

This is very true! In my pic you can see what I did to help with this:
1. I put some of that foam pipe insulation around the front and back cross-bars, it seems to help dampen the harmonics.

2. Also in the pic you can see a square of material that the PO had sewn to the bars to do the same thing. This worked well, but eventually I lost the piece when it came loose from the wind pressure and blew off somewhere. No

Yup, 43mph- mine too.
Mine used to have the sticker on it, but it's long gone.
I went the bungee route- it matches the one one my front hood handle (maybe I'll chrome those too Twisted Evil )

I've got a roof rack that I'm not using, I'd take $150. for it

This looks like an OK deal if you want the older style, I have no dog in this fight:

Good luck,
