new percentage tax when getting you tag
I went to the tag office to get my ghia registered. They informed me of a new tax where you pay a percentage of the NADA value of your car. I thought no big deal, its only 1% for a car that old. They told me it was going to cost 110 just on the tax, and I said excuse me? They said a 68 ghia in fair condition was worth 11,000. I explained mine was a driving project and even when finished it wouldn't be worth that much. So be warned when you go to tag your next new car lol

Re: new percentage tax when getting you tag
Wow if they consider that the value of our old cars i think they seriously put decimal in the wrong place.
If their willing to pay that for Vw projects I have some beautys they can buy from me. I would be filthy rich at those car values. Guess I should change my value on my collector car insurances

Re: new percentage tax when getting you tag
Yep, they valued my 70 Ghia at 14000, and charged me 140. Tried to appeal, but it doesn't usually help. I then offered to sell it to them for 10,000, and told them if its worth 14000, y'all can sell it quick for 12000 and make the county two grand in no time. Sadly they didn't take me up on it

They have a book of car values, and if you're car isn't in their book they go by nada. Where nada gets old VW values I don't know, cause they are waaaayyy off

Re: new percentage tax when getting you tag
I fear the day when I go to get my tag for my Bus. If they consider a Ghia to be worth $11,000.00, What can I expect my bus to be worth. A "fair condition" bus would most likely be in the 30-40k range by those standards.

Re: new percentage tax when getting you tag
I talked to my tag office recently and they told me as long as it wasnt titled, it would always use the old system. So the tag for my 60 vert was like $25. Apparently each office can make their own rules.

That is the way my local assessor 'splained to me...sort of!vw57drvr wrote:I talked to my tag office recently and they told me as long as it wasnt titled, it would always use the old system. So the tag for my 60 vert was like $25. Apparently each office can make their own rules.
I am under the impression that sales tax will only be collected for the first year in which you buy the car, titled or not. After that, no ad-valorem tax is assessed, just fees. For cars purchased and registered PRIOR to the new law, you still pay ad-valorem only (and fees of course!). I registered 6 cars in march, and only paid the ad-valorem and fees. Three are titled, three are not
"Apparently each office can make their own rules."
I think they all must follow the same rules, but from what I am hearing, they all don't understand the same rule the same way! Another one of those "WE are making it easier on you" laws!

Re: new percentage tax when getting you tag
Yep, I just renewed my tag on the ghia, the one I paid 140 plus tag fee for initially, and the renewal was only 20, as normal. It is a one time tax, but still

Re: new percentage tax when getting you tag
Yeah, my ghia had a title and I wanted to keep it. In bartow they said I could go without the title and they wouldn't charge me that, but I wanted a title rather than just a bill of sale. Thank goodness its only a one time tax

I think it is their response to private owners not collecting sales tax like dealers have to. Mostly it's when ownership changes

Re: new percentage tax when getting you tag
I sold my 74 bug and got a 73 bug. I got the tag transferred from the 74 to the 73 and it cost me $5.00. I think they may hit me with the tax when it is time to renew my tag.
Re: new percentage tax when getting you tag
When I went to register my 68 f100 they charged me $20. I asked about the tax thing and she said they don't do it for older vehicles. Didn't bother me. I also only had a bill of sale. We will see what happens when we register the bus. We now have a vin verification and was told we should be all good. Fingers crossed.

Re: new percentage tax when getting you tag
I just got back from the Tag Office in Henry County. I also just stroked a check for $260 bucks for my Tag. Car was not a VW but a 1972 year model. She said this process applied for all used cars prior to 1985 sold privately. Have a buddy who just bought a 49 truck and he told the same story.
What I was told. If the car does not pull up in the system, they move to NADA. I saw this first hand and knew then I was going to pay more then pennies as I am aware of the market value of the car. When she looked up fair market value she printed it off. She showed me the 3 values. They based my tax off of High Retail. The Tax is 1% of FMV. I said wow that seems a little unfair considering I did not pay near that for it. She took it to someone else and came back with a reduction (3k) based off the High Retail, but still above average. She said I had one other option. I could shred the title and pay the normal tag fee's of around $38.00 but no longer have a title. So I assume if you do not have a title then you will not have to pay the sales tax. If you have a title, you may as well look up nada and get ready to pay 1% on close to high retail. I imagine this is not firm in all offices since I complained and they lowered it 3K. She also said this was only at transfer/sale and that yearly I would pay a tag fee only. I did ask about my current vehicles and she said they will remain the same as before. I should be getting the renewals soon since I am a December renewal so I can update there.

Re: new percentage tax when getting you tag
FYI this only applies to vehicles purchased in 2013 or later. Up until the end of March, 2013 you had the option to "opt-in" to the program if you'd purchased and registered a vehicle in 2012. If your car was purchased before that time, your yearly fees won't change and you can't opt into the new way. It will be the same ad valorem taxes as usual. Now, when you buy and register a vehicle new or used you'll pay the sales tax that they want you to pay and that's that, but after that you'll only pay the tag fee every year, no more ad valorem. Sucks for those of us that like to trade and change cars like we do our underwear.
