New Thing owner in Kennesaw
Hi everyone,
Just purchased a 74 VW Thing about three weeks ago and love it, love it, love it. I'd wanted one for quite some time, but have only seen a handful in person on the road. My parents had a forest green Beetle in Germany (stationed there with the Army) from 1960-62 that they always regretted not shipping home, so they made up for it with a '72 orange convertible Beetle. So, I've been circling on the outskirts of Aircooled Town a lot of my life, and finally decided to become a resident!
I'll get photos up soon, but if you've seen one orange Thing with a rollbar, you've seen mine. We're putting a bikini top on it for the coming Fall cruising weather. It came with a brand new convertible top and windows, plus a craptastically rusted convertible frame. No sense putting lipstick on a pig, so we'll save up for a new frame from ThingShop in the spring. In the meantime, it's in great running condition and will soon sport a tiger-striped theme, thanks to our vinyl cutting machine. It will spend the coldest months in my husband's shop, rubbing noses with his father's collection of Chevrolets from a lifetime of horse-trading, getting a tuneup and that sticky gas pedal fixed.
We don't expect it to be fancied up, since that would make me too scared to drive it much for fear of a ding. I've had a rough year and a half, and buying this thing out of the blue was unexpected, but it makes me happy just to look at it, and I can't drive it without wearing a big smile. We are definitely planning to attend the Cruise the Coop and hope to see some of you at other events in the Kennesaw/Acworth/Woodstock/Dallas/Cartersville/Did I leave anyone out? area.
Yours in Thingy goodness,
Cat

I really like that rear tube bumper and the trailer hitch.

Re: New Thing owner in Kennesaw
Y'all that are local, hop over to the Events page. I listed the memorial car show we're doing for my father-in-law, who never met a motorized vehicle he didn't like
It's the James D. Price Memorial Car Show entry, and it's going to be Saturday November 7 in Woodstock. Would love for you guys to come show off your Things and Beetles and whatnot. I'll be parking mine next to the show banner on the street to get some rubbernecking traffic.
We'll have a memorial service during the event, but it's also a time to come show off a little and see some of his prized vehicles. There will be a couple of fun trophies, and we actually hope to do a proper car show next year.
Thanks!
