I know it has been a while,  all of my free time for the last four weeks has been studying /preparing to two qualification boards at work Razz Razz but now that is out of the way, I have been able to focus on more enjoyable things.

The wiring isn't as clean as I would like and I am open to suggestions. I also noticed a black streak on the #1 spark plug which I stripped out 2 years ago and had to put a sleeve in...put some more lock-thight on the sleeve and hopefully that will band-aid things for awhile. If not,  I may be looking for another head.

Looks great but for sure someone along the way has put your distributor drive gear in the wrong position .Nothing worse than a repaired spark plug head. Keep an eye on it.

Swapping the main jets from 50s to 55s and the emulsifiers from F5s to F6s this weekend. Hoping it will make a positive difference.

Mild success:!:  Still running hotter than I would like,  but the temp stopped climbing around 220-ish instead of continuing to climb until I shut it off or start letting it idle.

Not a fan of the idle jets I bought, but thrilled to finally have some progress.   Since I changed two things, I am not sure if it was the idle jets, the emulsion tubes or both that is making the difference.  Figure I'll run it like this for a few days and then try the 60 jets to see what happens. Razz

While using the .55 jets helped, it was still getting hot (just at slower rate). Swapped over to the .60 jets and saw no improvement, actually seemed worse. Back to the .55 jets and the F5 emulsifier tube and going to order some different air jet sizes to see what happens.

Just a few tips. 235 is about the upper safe limit on oil temps. The more important reading is the CHT. But that is very difficult to read efficiently. What is telling you that its running hot, other than oil temp? I have a 1776 with dual 40 dellortos in a 60 convertible, which has the least amount of cooling and my engine runs just fine with the tennis ball trick. However, I run every piece of tin that its supposed to have. I even run the thermostat and flaps. Pull the engine, double check all of the tin, fix that head, put the flaps back in and cruise. Single barrel carbs can work, but they tend to not be as smooth at idle as 2 barrel carbs. I assume your engine is stock, so you could get a german 34pict re-bushed and you would probably be more happy.

Oil temp is what I am monitoring. I've pulled the engine several times and the engine is clean. I had a 34 pict installed when this all began, but have made several small changes in trying to correct this and it may worth putting the stock carb back on to eliminate some of my variables.

Jetting/mixture, timing, and cooling tin are basically all that will affect temp. There are other things, like the width of your fan and the condition of your oil cooler bypass system. But I assume you have checked those. If not, double check that you have the right fan and aren't constantly bypassing your cooler.

Dropped/checked the bypass and pressure releaf valves, which looked fine. Not sure how to check paths to the oil cooler w/o pulling the engine and cooler to blow through the ports....and I can go through the dog house and cooling fins one more time. pale

The squares on the bottom of the cylinders are installed.  I do have a sensor for the oil temp.  I also gauge by hot hot all of the surrounding tin is to the touch.  As for the head temps, this is the best I could come up with and it doesn't make me feel any better.

You have to remember that the heads are going to be reaching ~350 degrees. Thats not a problem. That gauge you have is probably not even close, but given the increments on it, you are not even at 300. There are so many variables in reading CHT. The only real way to know your temp is to buy a Dakota digital with the spark plug ring and attach it under number 3 plug. That would be your worst case scenario. To me, I haven't seen any numbers on your engine that scares me. At this point, all your tin looks good, so focus on getting the ignition and A/F ratio correct and you should be fine. Just my opinion, but I would ditch those valve covers for stock. I guess I get a little picky, but its all in the name of keeping the engine dependable.

I think I am close on the A/F. I swapped to the aftermarket valve covers because I have had less problems with them leaking. It has been running cooler with the lower temperatures- especially in the mornings, but I still am not comfortable with how hot some of the parts are getting on the warmer days. I've had some other issues come up that have kept me preoccupied lately, and unfortunately, it looks like I am going to have to put off my piddling until the new year.

Finally back from deployment and had some time to spend working outside.  Trying another engine and external oil cooler.  First couple of testimes runs seemed positive until the acceleration cable broke. Neutral

That missing tin will cause the temps to rise substantially. Looks like the 2 under the exhaust manifold are missing also. I think you would be good on temps if you ditch the ill fitting chrome and add the missing tin.
