Oil spray in the engine compartment Empty Oil spray in the engine compartment

Post by 39coupe Thu Jul 31, 2008 8:35 am

I know this is a tuff topic without being able to see the car but here goes.

My '65 1200 40hp is spraying oil everywhere in the engine compartment. Can't seem to find where the heck it is coming from. The way it is spraying it is getting into the pully or belt somewhere. So my thought is that is coming from around the crank pully. Any other thoughts?

I would say look around the distributor, fuel pump, oil filler, and pulley. Since you have a pulley try it but if it is that you might need a sand seal pulley.

Oil spray in the engine compartment Empty spraying oil

Post by jim conner Thu Jul 31, 2008 6:18 pm

Frist thing I would do is clean that old girl up good, Put a plastic bag over the dizzy, spray a little water on the engine then some spray engine cleaner. Then let it sit for about five minutes hit it with the high preasure garden hose again, remove the bag and then lite her up. As Bryce stated a lot of leaks come from old dizzy seals which sell for about $1.00 Hope this helps Peace...Jim

Make sure the seal on the oil sensor is good. Oil leaking from there has a quick route to the pulley well.

Do clean up the engine and run it after it is clean and dry. I would look closely at the oil preasure switch or oil cooler seals. if its spraying these are the two areas that are presurized.

Also look for leaking around the oil cooler.
