I may just get me some refurbs on order. But will that make it not even crank? The gas smell is strong and it has backfired a few times. I pulled the dizzy gear out also is there a possibility I didnt get it back in correctly? And going by your screen name why on my baja (1600) when on tdc the rotor points at the actual number 1 cylinder and on this bus it doesnt..or should it?

A bus would have a vacuum pot and would put it into the sheet metal same with type 3 so they clock the drive gear to correct for this. So it would be correct if you have a centtifical advance dizzy like Mallory or Bosch the distributor drive gear can be set just like your Baja with no issues. Clearance for the dizzy is the only reason. The gas smell is it running rich the backfire is out of time issue

I do have single adv dizzy. Im still confused lol. Right now if im tdc it points back at me and to the right just a touch more or less right down to the pulley. Is that correct? And does anyone know about how to reinstall the gear? It may be that im off I dunno. I read on ratwell place the rotor facing at 4oclock that should be how the gear goes down in the hole? Sorry for all the questions just wanna get this thing running!

If you find TDC of #1 Then make sure rotor is pointing to #1 plug wire on cap

Doesnt matter which direction the rotor is pointing? Just as long as i have the plug wires starting with #1 on it? So basically I can pop my valve cover off and check to see im actually for sure on tdc..then wherever that rotor is pointing put my cap on and my wires arranged from there?

So to be clear..when im rotating the pulley the intake valve or one closest to front of bus should go down then back up and the exhaust valve should start to go in but stop it there and thats tdc? Im pretty sure I did all that yesterday and it still backfired but didnt fire over. I dunno guys lol.

Bad theory turn pullyfan counterclockwise till marks line up with timing ring at zero now you should be a one or three. now check and see which one has no load on lash adjusters. That loose one will be it.

I did what you said and got it to fire on up and run! I put in an order for a new temp sensor mines looking a bit crusty I read where that would cause the start up and instantly die junk it does. Get that on and go from there! Thanks guys.
