Camping recommendation
Spent Easter weekend at Dauphin Island, camping. Neat place to try on the Gulf. It's southwest of Mobile, AL.
Here's what I liked about it:
1. Fairly easy drive. Straight shot down 85 to 65. Not all the "slows and stops" of lower AL when you're headed to PC and Destin.
2. The campground is a short easy walk to the beach.
3. campground is adjacent to one of America's best bird sanctuaries. It's reportedly the first stop for birds headed north after winter.
4. According to many locals I met, it's a great area for fishing. (But we didn't fish)
5. It is definitely a great place for sailing which I DID do.
6. The people there were great; employees and the locals camping there.
7. Fort Gaines is within walking distance. They had an Easter sunrise service there.
Godspeed and happy camping

Re: Camping recommendation
Another recommendation.
This past weekend we went to Mile High Campground, just outside of Cherokee NC. If you like mountain views, this place is for you.
-campsites were good sized, plenty of room between you and your neighbor
-some good trails to do some hiking, but you have to find them
-no water at the sites, but they do have facilities with flushing toilets, running water, and a giant tank of propane to provide hot showers.
-no power anywhere, so bring a generator if you really need to plug anything up.
-very nice staff
-firewood can be bought on site
-you'll likely see elk
-in the middle of nowhere, so it's pretty quiet

Re: Camping recommendation
Just returned from another awesome place in NC; Standing Indian Campground in the Nantahala. It's not too far outside Franklin on Hwy 64. It's Federal so no electricity, water every couple of sites, but they have added hot shower facilities.
Great place for hiking, tubing (COLD water), and fishing.
Loop 5 was the best I thought, most privacy between sites and furthest away from others.

Hey man, not sure how small your kids are but when mine were still in playground mode, we really liked state parks. And my favorite nearest to Ellijay is Fort Mountain State Park. It's between Ellijay and Chatsworth.
Each site will have its own water and electricity. Bath houses are nice and clean with hot water.
The park rangers there are good about having kid friendly activities on weekends. The last time we went they had a "how to make camp fire desserts class" which was great.

Thanks for the response. I had already checked out that one. Good to hear a review!

Re: Camping recommendation
Found another one I like in the mountains near Nantahala Outdoor Center. It's called Lost Mine Campground. It has hot showers and a few sites with water and electric. It puts you less than a mile from NOC and the Appalachian Trail. Less than $20 a night.
Ping me if you want more details on it.

Re: Camping recommendation
Went to another great one this weekend; Table Rock State Park in western SC. Very pretty area. Here's my write up on Samba:

Re: Camping recommendation
A couple of more notes on that upper SC area:
We scouted another state park on the way home, Devils Fork. It's on Lake Jocassee. Also a very nice campground. The following notes would apply to both Devils Fork and Table Rock.
1. Pack in all food from home. I can't really recall seeing a grocery store on the way. Surely there was in towns like Walhalla and Pickens. But that would not be close to your campsite in any way.
2. They actually did have spotty wireless coverage. Personally I don't want it, but some folks may need it to check in at home.
3. The site pads were nice but there's a good chance you'll need levelers.
