Inside rear panels - 71 Bus Empty Inside rear panels - 71 Bus

Post by Lead man Sun Dec 22, 2013 9:18 am

Good morning,

It has been a long time since I was on the forum. Too many things going on in retirement and the making of fishing sinkers.
I finally got Max da bus out of the paint shop and now have to put all the spare parts back on.

The rewiring of the rear lights has been a nightmare. Max is a gray market 71 bus. Still has the kph odometer. I have tried to follow the various wiring diagrams and it has been an adventure.

Question: Does anyone know where to get "new" inside rear side panels. Those that mount on the inside rear cargo area / over the gas tank?

I have research about every VW parts site but can't seem to find them. Even TPM who makes a lot of these inside panels does not have them.

Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

Have a Merry Christmas and happy and safe New Year!!

Thank you.

Home Depot has a "kit" in stock!

Fiberboard panel cut to fit, covered in your choice of fabric, vinyl, or carpet!

TIP: Tape butcher paper, or paint mask paper over the area well past the finished edge. Trace the outline for the new panel, and also locate all the holes for the panel clips. Cut that out, and trim as needed and you have a pattern for both sides of the bus! (A side up for this one, B side up for that).

Alternatively, you may be able to find used panels to recover.

Thank you for the info. I thought about getting some masonite - fiber board. You mentioned a "kit" at Home Depot. Is this pre-cut or do I do it myself?

Will check on line to see their sku number if availalbe.

Thank you again!!

I shoulda' put a smiley after that instead of " ".

By "kit" I just meant that most all you need (panel board, tools, glue and such) can be found at Home Depot. The TIP I gave is just how I have done it in the past when old boards weren't available as templates.

If you have a large fabric store, or sewing center near you (I have to drive a bit to find one) you can find vinyl, and many types of upholstery fabrics.

Got it. I can handle that. I have 2 used panels from a 70 Bus that I have used for parts. I may be able to salvage them or use as templates. There is a clothe store in Morrow, I probably can the vinyl there.

Know anyone who may need some parts from a 70 bus let me know. A few members have scavenged a few parts from Maxine!!

Thank you.
