My 1969 Bug restoration Empty My 1969 Bug restoration

Post by vdubbers Tue Feb 07, 2012 9:53 pm

Hey guys, my name is Chris and this is my build thread for my beetle. Early last year, I bought this bug from a fellow member on here. I found it through a friend on one of my Reef club forums that I am apart of. My original plan for the bug was to drop a 13b rotary engine in it.. After much thought, I decided that for a considerable amount less, I could have just as much fun. I also thought the car would be more drivable , daily. I now plan on putting a AS-41 Case with 92mm jugs, Progressive weber, 8 dowel fly wheel, etc...

When I bought the engine case, I also picked up a rag top. The seats are going to be replaced with seats from a 1983 Porsche 944. I had to modify the stock seat frames for them to sit flat on top. I took the bottom part of the Vw seat off the seat frame(never liked the springs). I then cut the tabs of the frame and cut the seat positioner " hook" thing off. At this point the new seats could be welded to the frame. The seats will be recovered in cloth. This will only be a two seater .... I say that but, I will probably get a back seat recovered, so if I wanted to have it I could. The interior will be all black. I hope to also find a wood grain steering wheel. I will have heat and sound deadening material all through it. Sounds system will have Two 6x9 in the rear and two 5x4 in the front and a 10 inch sub in the back.

Anyway that is all for now.. can't tell all my plans now haha.

Some pics of the progress
Chris C

You need to find the correct url for the pictures that aren't working. One is working and you can see the url you copied/pasted below.

Code:
[img]http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/270470_2229171846363_1159836831_32708986_7091648_n.jpg[/img]

See how the one above ends in .jpg. All the others end in "theater". Those won't work.

Code:
[img]http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=2229172126370&set=a.2229161846113.2133523.1159836831&type=3&theater[img]

And yes, once you get the correct url, make sure you end it with [/img]

Currently I am taking the transaxle and swing arms off. Then it will be time to media blast it , paint it, and then re-assemble.

The hole in the tunnel usually indicates that the clutch cable tube has broken loose, and someone's welded it back in

Deck Lid is not a 69. other than that it looks correct to me. 69 should have only 2 slots or none. my 70 came with 2 sets of vents from the factory.

On the first page of pics, there is a pic of where the clutch cable tube was re-welded and the hole in the tunnel. Do I just close up the hole or leave it accessible?

I would recommend closing it. The tunnel is a vital piece of structure. Plus any open holes is just more sound to come through.

I think I did ok on the welding...or tacking.. not "really welding" I guess. I have never welded anything before just know the concept, watched a few youtube videos and have a little not so common sense. The only way to learn is by doing it
