63 OG Anthracite "Heidi"
I made a trade a while back with ALL of my various aquisitions for this little beauty. Not sure of where she came from, but she is in pretty damn good shape. Only major issues are the bottom of the driver door is rusted out, passenger door pillar has some rust issues, driver heater channel cover has some rust through, but structurally sound. Immediate plan is to do a pan swap to an already prepped 61 pan, fix the structural rust, all new brakes, buff the shit out of that OG paint, get her running and ride the hell out of her! My first runner in 15 years!! HELL YEA!!! On too the pics!
Those are the OG seat covers under there!!
And so the work begins!
New brakes, hard and soft lines. Sweet pan with adjustable front beam and lowered two clicks in the rear!
Almost there!!!
Together at last!!!
Sitting just right!
More to come....

That is the idea!!! Headed over tonight to try and get some more work done on her. Hopefully we will be able to fire her up tonight and get her running! Would be very sweet! Still need to get tires, ignition and a new battery. The structural rust repair is almost done.
Will update more later!

Re: 63 OG Anthracite "Heidi"
Have not had a whole lot of time lately to spend on Heidi, but was able to go over and piddle a little with her. Was able to strip the seat covers and see what was hiding underneath...
Those are the original covers!!! Anyone out there know if there is a way to soften them up so I can ride them OG and not rip them everytime I sit on them?
Also was able to score this for her from someone one here. Will go perfect against the grey...
Also firgured out that we will not be able to save the driver doo without destroying the OG paint. So rather than destroy the paint, we fixed it to where it looks ok and I will just be on the lookout for an OG 63 Anthracite driver door to replace. Until now, the one on there will do.
All I have left is tires (picking up tomorrow), 6V battery (picking up tomorrow), 40 hp exhaust (picking up from Drew/Tim Baker Wednesday) and about 8 hours worth of work, and I will finally have a running car!!! And one bad ass patina ride at that!!!

i'd try duct tape and Zymol vinyl conditioner - should soften them up a good bit

Re: 63 OG Anthracite "Heidi"
Got a little work done on her this week. New ignition, cleaned up all the wiring (there was a bunch if useless crap hiding under there), tank installed, fuel line hooked up (sending unit cable snapped putting it back together though), and the og interior put back in. Tried to get her started yesterday, but the battery I got was completely dead and she wouldn't even turn over. Got frustrated and called it a day.
On another note, my buddy mark rebuilt the passenger pillar and it looks sweet! He is pretty damn good with a welder. He told me that since I have to work this week, he should have her ready for pick up by Wednesday or Thursday. It could be a reality that I have my first running/driving/stopping beetle since I was in college. Can't wait!!! She is still dirty as hell and needs some deep cleaning but she is such a sweet ride!!! Will update as the week unfolds.

Re: 63 OG Anthracite "Heidi"
Got her running and stopping today!!!! Man what a great feeling. Turns out the problem the whole time was a busted post on the battery. Luckily, it was under warranty and we just swapped it out for a new one. After that, she started right up. I do have to replace the fuel pump, dist cap (cracked almost in half), and plug wires, but luckily those are all minute problems. All lights work except for one real tail light. Still have to figure out the wipers, but that will come later. Here is a video of her first start up and light testing, (sorry for the cell phone video, but its all we had).

Re: 63 OG Anthracite "Heidi"
EDIT: Just noticed yours is a 6v....
I have a good 6v motor, but the main gear is toast.
The below is for when you decide to go 12v....
Go with RPM750's '67 wiper motor and '67 switch.
Motor mounts to your '63's wiper frame and then you have a 12v set up with 2 speeds.
My '63's wiper knob fit just right on the '67 post. only difference is that you turn it now rather than pull it.
I paid more for my motor than what RPM750 is wanting for his here on the site.
I promise you want to do this...

I am going to have to work on the wipers. Tried with no avail to get them running. Gotta pick up a fuel pump, plug wires and brake sending unit to be good to go!! Waiting on WW to deliver some anthracite paint so I can paint the deck lid. She will be coming home Thursday!!

Re: 63 OG Anthracite "Heidi"
Got some more work done tonight. Got a rear bumper installed and test fit the rear deck lid. Will repaint the deck lid Thursday when the paint comes in. She is so close to coming home. I feel like a little kid that is waiting on Christmas to be here and can't wait for her to be in the driveway!
Next post will be here coming home and in my driveway!

Re: 63 OG Anthracite "Heidi"
SHE IS HOME!!! After what seems like forever, I finally have my car in my posession. I went and picked her up Thursday night and brought her home. Before bringing her home, I had to change plug wires, fuel pump and brake sensor. Ran out of time and couldnt put the deck lid on or install the e-brake handle (honstly forgot that one).
After getting her home, I had one day to get her cleaned up and ready for her first show at Airkooled Kustoms Bug's N Brats. Luckily my mom was off for the day and spend most of the afternoon friday cleaning the inside. She did a great job and the OG interior still looks pretty good. A little rough around the edges, but overall very nice.
The idea was to install the deck lid before we got to the show, but whoever owned the deck lid before braised the hinges in and they were off by about 1/4" and could not get it on. Oh well, I'll deal with that later.
I can not express how happy I am to finally have another beetle in my posession! Friday night, I just drove her around town with the biggest grin on my face. Today I went and ran some errands in her and had the greatest time. Still have a lot of kinks to work out, but it feels so great to finally have her in my driveway!
Now onto the pictures...
Pulling out of the garage on her maiden voyage.
And we're off!
Behind the wheel.
Please note the shit eatin grin!
Home safe!!!
Our first show!!!
Kate taking a nap.

One happy man!

Re: 63 OG Anthracite "Heidi"
Finally got my deck lid installed this weekend. Looks pretty good for a rattle can job. I think it will look better once I buff out the OG paing on the rest of the car. On another note. We will finally be in our new home in Georgia the second week of December. Can't wait!!!

Re: 63 OG Anthracite "Heidi"
Thanks guys!! We are very excited. I really want to try and have a get together at our house once we get settled. Would really like to have as many of my new VW friends over as possible. Ill fire up the big green eg and cook something for everyone. We could make it the January or February meeting if you guys could agree.
