Type 4 engine question
Somebody please explain to my why the 1.7l EC engine code has more HP than the 2.0l GD engine.
I have a 2.0 that I am considering putting in Pippi but I'm having second thoughts since the only reason I would do it is to increase the HP and/or possibly gas mileage.

Re: Type 4 engine question
Dealing with vws and esp type 4 engines think torque not HP / base your findings on that and make your choice from there. How you set it up carb, ignition and exhaust wise will determine max output rubber to the road yea man happy trails. Good luck

Re: Type 4 engine question
So assuming a stock FI and exhaust system on both of these motors, What would the torque difference be?
Re: Type 4 engine question
Very little at best the 2.0 has a bigger crank for more torque. True values for both configurations are out there. They both have there pros and cons. I run a 1.7 in my 72 bay camper with little to no issues. I can tell you I have a stock 2.0 from a 914 in my car 76 bug and motor has 80hp and 110 ftlbs of torque w/ dual 40mm carbs exhaust dizzy 1.7 rocker set modified cromoly pushrods ect.hope that helps.

Re: Type 4 engine question
Allow me to chime in here. I own two Type IV motors. Both about 2.2 liter. The one in my 56 Ragtop is the V-Type DTM. The one in my 67 Bus is the older DTM style. The main differences I see are torque vs rev. The IV motor is not fast off the line but kicks in at 2nd gear. Then hauls ass. All while running at a lower rpm and much cooler. Here are some real numbers for you. Drove my 67 Bus (Grey One) to YUBuggin last weekend from Savannah. Stopped only once to refuel (10gal). I averaged 75 mph on I-16 & I-75. Oil temp was consistent 180 degrees!! Cylinder Temp was consistent 200 degrees!! Oil Pressure 18-20. Tach never above 3500 rpm. Try getting those numbers on the Type I motor. I never got my 1914 Type I to run that cool at high mph. Negative: Cost
I don't know if this helps you but I'm pretty happy with my Type IVs. Did I mention I also have AC on my motors??[img][/img]

Re: Type 4 engine question
I'm currently running a 1.7 in my '76 Westy. No real performance concerns at all. The motor came out of a 412 so the oil filler cap is in a weird place but it's only an issue when you change the oil. Also, I have a stripped exhaust stud on #3 so I eventually need to fix that.
I have a 2.0 in my garage that I'm considering putting in rather than the 1.7. just trying to weigh my options before I decide one way or the other.
Thanks for the input.

No replacement for displacement. Torque is your friend.

Not to hijack the thread but that seems awfully cold. The cht shouldn't be the same temp as the oil. My type IV runs about 350 on a good day. Is it a camper special?

Re: Type 4 engine question
Greg, I was thinking the same thing. I have an super early Jake engine, with gauges, and cyl heads are typically 300 ish. Is the sender under the spark plug, or just on a cyl head stud? it makes a huge difference where you put it.
Re: Type 4 engine question
Sender is not on spark plug. Sender is on cyl head stud on #3

When he asked if it was a camper special, he was referring to a type 4 set-up that Jake builds, not what model bus it is...........

Hmm...... Don't think I've ever heard of any of Jake's motors referred to as a "camper special"?

Re: Type 4 engine question
You don't know about camper specials because you only buy 2270 motors for your cars so why would ya know. The camper special is for those who want just a little more for a whole lots less. Happy motoring and help this guy out with his plight of running a 2.0 in his bus.I bet if its used like your donor 412 at best you will only see a small difference unless its rebuilt with all the right parts good luck with your swap.
