Most plates are steel. I'm guessing this is a YOM plate? Anyone that can do sheet metal welding and not melting should be able to repair the metal, the paint is a different beast.

My first thought as well Laughing

Does re-painting a vintage plate void the ability to use it as a YOM? I always thought that was considered "altered."

I painted my tag to match the color of my bus and never had a problem. The girl at the DMV even said it was the nicest YOM plate she had seen....... Twisted Evil

Georgia is very relaxed on YOM plates compared to other states. Technically, I don't think you are supposed to re-paint them, but I've never heard of anybody having any problems. Some states, you actually have to send in the plates for inspection/approval, but georgia, you just take it to the tag office and they type the numbers into the computer. I've seen some repainted and others that were so crusty you would think they would fall apart. I think as long as the person at the tag office can read the numbers and input them into the computer, you are good.
