Re: points gap on a dizzy?
That is the initial setting.
What are you calling a "dizzy" distributor?

Re: points gap on a dizzy?
RIGHT you guys got me dizzy just reading this. If your at the point you feel you need to adjust your points best off just to replace them and condenser. 016 is good start then check with a dwell meter if ya don't have one then find a friendly mechanic and have him check your work.

Re: points gap on a dizzy?
haha well i had never heard it called a dizzy so i thought that was a brand or type of distributor. any way the points definatly need adjusted because i took them out to clean them but didn't realize they could be adjusted.

I just thought it was because "dizzy" was easier to type than "distributor."

Re: points gap on a dizzy?
i thought "dizzy" was a word for a centrifugal advancing distributor because the weights spun around. lol

Re: points gap on a dizzy?
Yes. Electronic ignition made my companies like Pertronix. Install and no need to adjust points anymore. Some people love them (me) and others hate them. I've been running one ever since I started driving VWs (over 15 years). You just have to be careful to not let the magic smoke out when you run them.redneck_davis wrote:Somebody told me it was the 80 dollar kit that replaces points and condenser. . Re: points gap on a dizzy?
It's about as simple as you can get. You just remove the points and condenser and install the kit.Brooks424 wrote:I need to replace mine, is this an easy process to do for someone that's never done it before.

Re: points gap on a dizzy?
You're going to have to remove the "dizzy" to do it though. If you don't know how to time your car, just take some paint or whiteout and mark you dizzy at the base where the clamp with the 10mm nut is so you can line the dizzy back up after you put the unit in. Then take it somewhere to get it timed properly.bumblebuggy wrote:It's about as simple as you can get. Re: points gap on a dizzy?
You'll have to order the electric points from a VW parts place. Herrell probably has them. I think Summit sells them as well.Brooks424 wrote:And I can get all this stuff at a local parts store?

Re: points gap on a dizzy?
i replaced the points, coil, and condensor on my super beetle but it still wont fire. it has voltage going to the coil and even if i spray ether in the carb it wont fire and before that it did a periodic "jumping" as if i shifted too early or shut the key off for a second. any ideas?

Re: points gap on a dizzy?
It wont.fire? Or.it wont crank?
To check fire pull the coil wire from the cap. Put 1/8 in away from a good ground and look for spark.
If there. pull a spark plug wire and test it the same(lot easier to plug up an extra plug you have laying around for truck, lawnmower, .vw it dont matter)
Couple ways to check on fuel. Make sure the solenoid on your carb (round with
Single wire) clicks when the key is switched on no click= no fuel into motor.
Pull the drain screw and see if the carb.drains.
