ive heard of so many ways to time an aircooled engine that it makes my head spin. lol

im just curious how you like to do it. some people use a timing light and check the timing at high RPMs by comparing the notch on the pulley to where the belt leaves the pulley, some people time it statically with the engine off using a small test light to see when the points close. and others time it while it idles. some people time it while its at 3000RPMs and time it exactly to the notch. some time at 7.5 degrees and some people even time them to 10degrees BTDC. so many choices lol. i like the idea of doing it static with the engine off because i have a 009 distributor and i also dont have a DWELL meter to do it while its advanced.

Different distributors have different advance mechanisms (centrifugal, vacuum, combination of both). They also have different advance curves. This is why you are seeing so many different techniques and degree settings.

The 009 is a cetntrifugal(mechanical) advance distributor and is best timed at full advance, which usually occurs around 3000rpm. Suggested timing is between 28-32 degrees btdc. You need a timing light for this.

I use my rolex and a piece of safety wire and a 12 cent light bulb works great 2800 rpm and set to 28 degree and ferget about it. http://www.cbperformance.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=1884 Ugrede to one of these pullys or a berg one stay away from china crap and ditch that nasty oem bent up steel junk you have on there and Leave the notches for the type 3 guys

Good man guess now you need a good timing lightrev motor to 2800 rpm as shown on your monster tach and set it to 28 and your dome man

I use a silver marker on the case split and pulley mark and time it in the shade. The mark shows up like a light house beacon no matter which pulley you use.

i timed it to 7.5 BTDC with the engine off using a test light to see when the points close and today i borrowed a timing light and when i reved it up to full advance it was running at 27BTDC spot on!! haha its running a lot better.

BTW does anyone know why i cant seem to get my carburator to adjust? it has a 34pict-4 and it seems whenever i turn the bypass screw or volume control screw the engine doesnt change at all it seems. and when it idles it will idle fine for a min or two then the RPMs drop and it sputters and tries to die?

i just rebuilt the carb so the o-rings on the screws are in good condition

I think theres a thread about that in helpful hints? Maybe . . But it could be a vacuum leak. Hows it idle? Fixed my leak but have not tried to adjust my carb yet. But it was doing the same thing w the past 2carbs and they both had a vac leak going on

Hey, just wanted to say that the 009 is best timed at 3000k rpm. The timing at idle isn't really that important. On the carb vac leak, has the carb been rebushed recently? That's where the leak is if it hasn't.

the RPM doesnt matter. just aim the timing light and rev the engine until the distrubutor reaches its full advance, which usually happens between 2800-3000 RPMS. in my case when i time my 009 to 27BTDC at 3000RPM the timing is also spot on at 7.5BTDC at idle. i dont know if thats the case for all 009s.

the carb has never been rebushed however when i spray starter fluid around it while its running the engine ddoes not change so i assume the carb isn't leaking aroundd the shafts.

Is the carb a 34 pict 3? Perhaps you overtightened the idle jet when you rebuilt it. See this thread which talks about loosening that jet just a tad to improve idle and tuning conditions

im running a solex 34 pict 4

i do have a 34 pict 3 made by bocar but it runs even worst with that carb on it. the bocar has a bunch of un nessesary jets in it.
