MLK Weekend Road Trip/ Grt. Smokies Nat. Park
I should have posted this here in the first place.
Some of us will be leaving Cartersville this coming Saturday morning and heading to Western North Carolina and back down through 10-E-C on Monday. We will plan to leave here at 9am, and drive north on US 411 to US 64, then east through Murphy and Andrews N.C.
First night will be spent in the "gorgeous" Nantahala Gorge just west of Bryson City, N.C. We will depart the gorge Sunday morning and drive through Cherokee N.C. and into the Great Smokies National Park. Some short stops along the way, then Gatlinburg for a ride on the chairlift or the gondola. We will spend Sunday night in Pigeon Forge, then on Monday drive back through Ware's valley, Townsend and Maryville TN. then back into Georgia on US 411.
Family style trip, father, son, grandsons. We have been doing this trip for years with the kids being out of school for the Monday holiday. My friend John will be camp cook, and that fact alone makes the trip a success. John is a nationally ranked BBQ competitor, and makes awesome meals with his Dutch ovens sure to please any palette.
If you prefer not to camp, or commit to the entire trip, join us along the way any day of the trip. We may lodge indoors in Gatlinburg Sunday night if the weather gets too rough. Saturday night's campground is just a few feet off the Nantahala riverbank, and the place we will park has electricity at each site, and very clean and well heated restroom/shower facilities.
