I'm interested in you guys opinion of using a stock Type 1 Trans(4.12 R/P) in a Bay. I've read through a few of the BS threads on the Samba. I know the Splitty guys do this using either an IRS or Swing trans. Are the Splitties much lighter than a Bay? I drive my Bus daily to work and when going to a show a good bit of gear and the wife if we are camping. Not a Westy, Bus has been weighted and falls around 2800 lbs. Stock motor(1600DP), I don't dog my rides, I'm wanting to run around 60-65 comfortably with an rpm around 3200-3500. The 002 truns the engine around 3800-4000 @ those same speeds.

My concerns are.....
~Trans temps on long drives, 6-8 hrs.
~Engine lower engine rpms(Engine Temps) while pushing more weight.
~Mods needed to do the swap.

So bottom line results would be to lower the screaming engine rpm while cruising at a good pace on the interstate.

Bug irs is out of the ? with that heavy bay stick with the beef. Trans temp is no issue with proper gear oil but engine temp is critical. Keeping the fan speed up for cooling and making sure all your cooling tins are 99.99% great condition sealed with no air leaks. There are way to many variables for this ? engine size, carb and jetting, wheel tire size, oil volume ect for highway speeds. With your current rpm around 3800 to 4000 at 65 mph the 4:12 sounds ok for your small wheel and tire combo that i think your running the 4:12 will drop rpm. You will have to remember when running tall gears that if your running slow on highway or backroads you run risk of getting hot letting fan speed drop below 3200 rpm. Check gearing calculation chart to get her close. These trannys like torque for the hills a stock 1600 just wont have it. Hope this helps Type 1 Trans Swap to a Bay Type 2 Resampled_2012-07-04_14-05-13_555_zps4d11c500

Move up tp a 75.... 002 trans with a 4:86 ring and Pinion or even further to a 4:57 ring and pinion.

I can build any ratio you want as long as you have the HP to push the weight.

4:57 R&P is in the 091 transaxles in the 77-79 type 2's.

You CAN put a 091 in your early bus with some front mount work.

Lots of options.

Remember this, An engine that yurns slower but works harder, will over-heat because the fan is spinning less RPM's ; / Just a thought!
Optimal cooling is Paramount!

Just checked the final drive on a Splitty with RGBs and it is 4.37:1. So going from that to a 4.12:1 is not as big a deal s going from 5.37:1 to 4.12:1(Type 1 IRS). The weight is about 4-500 more for a Bay. The difference between the 4.37 and 4.12 is about 6%. So going from 5.375 to the 4.86 would be about 9.5%. I'm thinking now if I stay with in that window of about 6-9% should be good. IRS trans didn't come from the factory with that ration so a custom built one is most likely the way to go. I need to give Gene a call.

Thanks Guys
