Re: The Mutt Bug
More updates.
Got the carb rebuilt, clean, and installed back on the motor.
Installed my new tie rod ends and cleaned up ready for paint.
Then I moved to the front beam and started by knocking out the old ball joints, cut off all the factory brackets that I don't need anymore and started spreading some mud to smooth it up.
Welded up and smoothed out the gas pedal and then made holes in it and the e-handle to add a little character to them.
Another round of sandblasting
Another round of spraying epoxy

Re: The Mutt Bug
Went ahead and drilled the brake and clutch pedal to match the gas pedal.
Got the new balljoints installed on the beam and the beam sprayed
Molded the top of the beam bracket to the top tube for a smoother look.
After the color dried I went back and cleaned the paint out of the bevels before clearing to add a little contrast.
Now hopefully this week I can start putting the chassis back together

Re: The Mutt Bug
Started putting chassis back together. Got the new shift rod and bushing installed, pedal assembly, bus master cylinder, new clutch and throttle cables, trans cradle, extension, and front beam.
Also started the dreadful task of cleaning years of grease and grime off the trans.

Re: The Mutt Bug
While installing my new front trans mount I couldn't reuse the cup like object around the old mount on the new mount due to the studs being to short. Is it fine to run without ,cant really see the need for it, or do I need it and just have the wrong mount? I can't seem to find any info on it and feel like a complete idiot for not knowing but guess I've never ran into this problem before. Here is some pictures of what I'm referring to as the cup like object.

Re: The Mutt Bug
Are you going to run without a steering dampner? I didn't know if the beam extender does away with that

That is a cage and is used to prevent excessive movement of the mount. You can try to run without it but may not like the results. There are a ton of people having the same problem with the new mounts having short studs, seems all the sources for them have dried up and no matter who sells them, they all come from the same maker. I would reuse a known good original mount before trying the new one without the cage. Should be no problem without the steering stabilizer. IMHO

Re: The Mutt Bug
Yeah I plan to run without a stabilizer I just think it'll junk up the front end to much. If it becomes a problem on the road I'll just build a bracket off the beam to attach it to.
Attack thanks for the insight on the mount cage I'll stratch my head on that one for a minute to decide if I wanna try it or not. Its always good to learn something new.
Doodle I'll let you know on the top I may just need another since the donar I have is a little beat up and I see your just in Loganiville so your just up the road from me.
Also thanks for the compliments guys it really keeps me motivated to get it done.

Re: The Mutt Bug
Some good reads. I wonder if since the Mutt want be a daily driver if running without the cage would be fine. Guess I'll be the guinea pig and give a report after some road time.Attack chicken wrote:No problem, here are a few links.

Re: The Mutt Bug
Little more work on the Mutt this weekend.
Sprayed some more epoxy and now all the rest of the chassis parts are painted
Getting inner parts ready to start reassembling the swing arms.
Working on cutting down and drilling the swing plates to work on my IRS pan.
Also more work on the top.
Patch piece for the front section.
Finished up welding and shaping the front windshield posts.
Started reshaping the back window lip.

Re: The Mutt Bug
More progress tonight.
Got the axle shafts installed along with installing new wheel cylinders, pads, and then hubs.
After getting the rear almost buttoned up I just wasn't pleased with how plan the trans looked so I figured I'd try and add a little flare to it. Still got a lot to outline but I think it'll add a nice touch when done.
