massIVe in a Ghia..? Empty massIVe in a Ghia..?

Post by ASBug Sun Mar 25, 2012 8:14 pm

Ok,
I do not have the dough to get a Raby massIVe engine, but I do have a 914 - 1.7 and a bus 2.0 and a ghia that needs an engine.
Has any one ever put together a T1 or Porche kit on one of these so it could be put into a Ghia?
A couple of questions for those in the know:
1) Looks like I'll also need a special flywheel for the the engine, any one have any good experience with one over another...
2) Looks like a conversion is needed to mount the alt / gen, any machining of the block neccessary?
3) whick will be the better engine for this application, the 1.7 heads (porsche) are better flowing from what I have heard.
4) Any one ever used the DTM cooler from Raby? - thinking this may just be the easiest thing.... but expensive.

I'm sure I'll have more questions, but just testing the waters to see if anyone has done this yet in the clubs...
Thanks,
KC

Tons of info about Type 4 conversions. I will probably be up at Jake's next weekend if you have any specific ?'s I can ask for you.

Thanks,
I'll just call raby's and ask what I'll need.
I have access to CAD and a slew of machine shops, but it isn't always fun to reinvent the wheel...
Just looking to see if anyone on here had made a franken shroud that worked out of a T1 and T4 combo weld up...

I have a converted type 4 in my Thing. I used the kit from Jake and it fits easily. A Ghia has plenty of room in the engine bay. You'll love the difference in drivability with a type 4. I think Jake will tell you to go with the 1.7 engine. Type4revolution can give you some good feedback on engine choice too.

I appreciate all the heads up.
I have a 1600 to go into the ghia as soon as I get the pans in, body work done... etc.
But these IV engines I have were runners and I think they would be different in a ghia.
