Alt vs Gen
Ok...been advised that I should change to an alternator. Not doubting that opinion, but wanting to get some more feedback. Anyone DD'ing a type 1 with a generator? If so, what are your experiences and what loads are you running?

Re: Alt vs Gen
I drive mine with a generator. Normally pretty trouble free. I have the new electronic regulator. Although they are ugly, they are very dependable. I like the look of a generator better than the big bulky face of an alternator. However, I do NOT run anything other than the occassional GPS, but in the past I have ran a SMALL amp and stereo with no issues. If a stereo is what you are after, the conversion may be a pretty good idea. Just be careful of what you buy.

Re: Alt vs Gen
The alternator puts out a bunch more amps than a generator, and your lights won't dim and brighten at stop lights- more juice to your ignition system-
Aesthetically, the generator does look better though

I run a generator in my 71 and it has been problem-free, but there is no radio or any extra electric devices in that car. I would say, you will be better off with the alternator if you plan to run additional electronics.

Thanks all. We will be running stereo, GPS, phone/laptop/camera/ipad chargers and possibly a CB.
Aesthetics mean nothing, this is about function.
If I convert to alternator, what needs to be changed?

Call Clyde. He has what you need to convert. It is pretty easy.

If your starting from scratch a lot of online vendors sell the complete kit. As for the CB I run with one to, its funny the stuff you hear and you can get traffic updates instantly as well as location on where the cops are sitting!

Yeah, we are really looking forward to running one this year. It has been on our "to do" list, but it has always been at the very bottom.
