'71 Ghia Vert "Yellow Submarine"
Ok...been holding off on posting this until the car was in our hands and we could check the vin and find out just what it is. But now, after travelling 1500 miles this past weekend it is safely home.
The car is very rough. Every panel is either rusted or dented or both. But it is a complete car and looks pretty unmolested...just very neglected.
So definitely not worth restoring, but perfect for our 2012 BABE rally car.
More pics up at www.foolswagen.com and I willbe posting updates here as well.

Re: '71 Ghia Vert "Yellow Submarine"
It was dubbed the "Yellow Submarine" by my friend Jim who did the pre-purchase inspection. In his words "it's yellow and it looks like it has been underwater."

Re: '71 Ghia Vert "Yellow Submarine"
Finally got some time yesterday to work on the sub. Ripped all of the old top material off and with half a can of PB Blaster was able to get the top frame to fold. Car instantly looked better.
Removed the rear window and rear seat (interesting that it looks like a seat but according to the door label this is a 2 seater), a bunch of carpet, tar boards, and miscellaneous junk. Then broke out the shop vac and sucked up at least 20 pounds of flaky rust. After filling two big trash bags and the shop vac this is what we have:
We finished up late yesterday and the pic was taken about 5:30 this am, but you get the general idea. The car is rusty. Very very very rusty. I had known that pretty much all of the driver's pan was gone. The passenger side is slightly better. The rust through in the panel over the trans was an unexpected surpise. Will have to get some more pics, but there is also a spot under the dash that is rusted though. Right next to the fuse box which is also coated in rust.
Hope to finish cleaning up the car this week and then have my metal experts over this coming weekend to get their opinion.

Re: '71 Ghia Vert "Yellow Submarine"
Went to Joe's today planning on putting in a full day. Joe surprised me by having just about everything finished with only one small patch for the battery tray left to weld. Awesome! Going to get it to bring it home tomorrow morning.
Will put some pics up on the website later tonight.

Well the Ghia made it all the way to NOLA and we won the event! Still trying to catch up on my sleep and will be updating our website in the coming days.
Wanted to give a big thanks to all that helped us get there and single out Clyde of Athens German Aircooled, Darrell and Silke Robertson and of course Joe Murphy for all of their help.

KC...the event typically runs from NY (Staten Island) to New Orleans during the first week in June with challenges each day (usually digital photo scavenger hunt) and tailgating in the host hotel parking lot each night. Rules are simple, bring a crap car older than '96 that you bought for less than $500. Spend what you need to make it safe for the journey. No one checks receipts, but make sure the car is a beater. Show up in something too nice and you just won't fit in.
The organizers have promised a bunch of changes for 2013, including a new start location and a new route so next year could be very different. As soon as those details are announced I will post them here.

I found the main wesite and read about the event.
Looks like a lot of fun!
Keep us informed about the progress for next years run.
I was looking at the scoring and I figured a pre-'65 citroien 2cv was the best car to get the most upfront points with...
LOL.

Yup...I have the vert frame...and the car is in NOLA with a friend. If it doesn't sell in the next few weeks I may have to get a tow bar and go get it.
