Happy New Year everyone.

Work continued on the Bus today. I have some rust through on the Engine lid hinge drivers side.

I have a part from the Snake Bus, cut that piece off and here it is.
1970 Bay Window "Moto" - Page 2 010

Little rusty on the back but it will work.
1970 Bay Window "Moto" - Page 2 011

Cut out the old hinge.

Made sure it lined up and that I measured correctly.
Off just a bit but not to worry.

Made some adjustments and welded it in...

Ground the welds..

And checked the fitment again....

Another problem solved and on to the dog leg issue tomorrow.

Working on the Bus again today lots of stuff repaired.

Started on this area. Was going to repair the cut out section on the dog leg but decided that access would be easier to do the back section first. Really hard to get my head with a welding helmet on it in there.
This is what I started with....
1970 Bay Window "Moto" - Page 2 001-1

Then I got to digging......
1970 Bay Window "Moto" - Page 2 003-1

and digging....
1970 Bay Window "Moto" - Page 2 006

Well cut out a patch and tacked it in.....
1970 Bay Window "Moto" - Page 2 007

Then I had to fix the floor....
1970 Bay Window "Moto" - Page 2 011-1

Cut a patch...
1970 Bay Window "Moto" - Page 2 012-1

Welded it in....
1970 Bay Window "Moto" - Page 2 015

I fixed the other spot in the wheel well. Made a patch and welded it in. Ground it down after all welding was finished.
1970 Bay Window "Moto" - Page 2 016-1

1970 Bay Window "Moto" - Page 2 018-1

The next repair was the rust through in this area.....
1970 Bay Window "Moto" - Page 2 017-1

Cut out the rust and made a patch, held it in place to check fitment.....
1970 Bay Window "Moto" - Page 2 019

Then welded it in....
1970 Bay Window "Moto" - Page 2 020

And ground everything down at the end of the day.
1970 Bay Window "Moto" - Page 2 022-1

I'm beat might take tomorrow off. I'm off from work the next two days and I really need to get as much done as I can. I'm afraid if I sit out a day I'll loose my mojo!

Well final day of work on the Bus before I have to return to work.

I worked on these two areas today...
Passenger floor area.
1970 Bay Window "Moto" - Page 2 004-1

And the dreaded dog leg.
1970 Bay Window "Moto" - Page 2 007-1

First I had to prepare some patch panels from my '71 parts Bus.
1970 Bay Window "Moto" - Page 2 002-1

1970 Bay Window "Moto" - Page 2 001-2

I tried to retain the factory ribs that are in the floor so I cut out different sections from the parts Bus so that I could rotate and fit it to make this patch. I had to cut up on the seat stand to remove a rusty area. I got part way through on the floor and decided to move onto the dog leg.
1970 Bay Window "Moto" - Page 2 006-1

I cut out the old dog leg measuring like I did to make the patch.
1970 Bay Window "Moto" - Page 2 008-1

Make sure you cut on different sides of the lines so that the curf, the slot the blade makes when cutting, will be minimal and the panels will butt up against one another. It is much easier to weld the panels together and the weld will be falter.

Here is my other concern the wheel well opening on the back.
1970 Bay Window "Moto" - Page 2 010-2

I fit the patch in and just marked where the inner portion lined up with the portion still on the Bus, then just cut it out.

I refit it and double checked the fit several times clamping it to see if any of the seams needed tweaking. And of course there were several, so remove grind, refit, check, remove grind until it's perfect.
1970 Bay Window "Moto" - Page 2 013-2

Fits great, now time to weld it in. I like to tack it in several places so it doesn't move. Always leave the clamps in place and try not to get the metal to hot.
1970 Bay Window "Moto" - Page 2 015-1

I was a bit disappointed with the top but I can straighten it with a little filler later.
1970 Bay Window "Moto" - Page 2 016-2

1970 Bay Window "Moto" - Page 2 017-2

Even the wheel well area turned out great....
1970 Bay Window "Moto" - Page 2 014-2

And then grinding, I hate grinding....
1970 Bay Window "Moto" - Page 2 018-2

1970 Bay Window "Moto" - Page 2 019-1

Glad this task is done.....

How much do you charge per hour? Very Happy Looks great man. Looks much better than the job I did welding up all my antenna holes (found 2 more under some bondo). Pics of that job will NOT be shown here cause it's so embarrassing. I used to not mind it, but I have really come to hate welding. You look like a pro.

Thanks Eric, Peter, really the ideal welding practice would be TIG. But I don't have the expensive equipment to do that. We have it at work but I don't have 480v 3 phase to run it at the house.

The rate is $60 p/hr. lol

The last five days, well I took the cold ass day off has been productive. I used an entire 20cft bottle of gas on the MIG and managed to burn myself in several places. I still have to do the rockers I'm waiting on parts for those so maybe do some sanding and priming this weekend.

More work today, nice weather out.

Started with the drivers side wheel well. Rusted just like the Passenger side. So the repair is similar so I skipped much of the details. Here are a few pics....
Drivers wheel well...
1970 Bay Window "Moto" - Page 2 002-2

Removed most of the rust and made a patch....
1970 Bay Window "Moto" - Page 2 008-2

Welded it all up and then ground all the welds....
1970 Bay Window "Moto" - Page 2 010-3

One other area of work that was completed is the drivers floor....
1970 Bay Window "Moto" - Page 2 011-3

1970 Bay Window "Moto" - Page 2 012-3

1970 Bay Window "Moto" - Page 2 013-3

Then I cut in the ribs...
1970 Bay Window "Moto" - Page 2 014-3

Did one other rib but didn't get a pic. Here is the finished floor, welded and ground.....
1970 Bay Window "Moto" - Page 2 017-3

The list is getting smaller, can't wait to start sanding and priming.

Thanks guys. I did mange to clean the shop a little more, can't stand tools everywhere and piles of dirt/rust on the floor.

I also removed the drivers b/drum to see why it was so hard to roll over. Brakes were adjusted right but over the years looked like the pads were gummed up on the surface and were stuck to the drum. Scraped the brake material off the drum adjusted the brakes in so I can move it around in the shop.

Worked on the Bus for a while today. Went back and worked on the passenger front floor. Didn't finish, I did get a large patch in there. I have one small patch to do and then grind the welds.

Front floors will be finished, Monday night.

Bob, After looking at all these photos from beginning to now, what progress. I assume this is not the same bus your were going to scrap? At least when you are done it really will be stable and safe. Really how much do you charge to weld? Need some work on my left front floor, very similar to your rust hole under the drivers floor area. Great job!!!!
I scrubbed Max out yesterday and the day before. Got him up in stands at an angle and the soap, bleach & water flowed out the sliding door. 40+ yrs of dirt, dust, grease and gunk.
