Re: '67 Beetle "Judy"
Bummer. I think I killed Judy's starter. I was cracking her up so I could move her into the garage. I heard this awful crunch and then no response from the starter anymore. Oh well.
Re: '67 Beetle "Judy"
You did put the steering coupler back on right? lol

Re: '67 Beetle "Judy"
enlighten me? WHen I turn the switch I get nothing at all. Lights on the speedo but no starter noise. How do I check the starter bushing?callahan wrote:check the starter bushing
Yeah, I did, But thanks for the heads up. That wouldn't have been the first really stupid mistake I'd made.vw57drvr wrote:You did put the steering coupler back on right? lol

Re: '67 Beetle "Judy"
pull the starter out and see if the bushing is in the hole it goes into in the tranny case. my starter bushing came apart and was causing the starter to bind up and eventually locked it up. could just be the starter though lol
Re: '67 Beetle "Judy"
hit the starter with a hammer as someone else tries to start it if it turns over is the starter

Finally reclaimed my garage from the chaos so now I can get back to work on Judy.
bought a new starter
Pulled the rear glass
Installed the mirror.

Re: '67 Beetle "Judy"
Pulled the starter to replace it and noticed that the new one is much bigger.
I checked my starter bushing and it looks intact. My concern is that the shaft and the gear are bigger on the new one.

Re: '67 Beetle "Judy"
I would get a starter for an auto stick. Don't use the bushings in the trans so less to go wrong.

I think I'll do that.

I think ended up with a 6v starter. Glad I found out before I wired it up.

Re: '67 Beetle "Judy"
Old bushing should be fine to stay in there as long as it's tight (which they usually are).
Good luck with the autostick starter. They are definitely the way to go IF you can get a decent one. I tried that route, and the first one came apart within a week, and the second one screeched like a stuck pig all the time, so I took it back as well and went back to a regular starter. But lots of people have good luck with them. Auto store will take it back and swap it out if you have any problems, I just got tired of installing/removing them.

Re: '67 Beetle "Judy"
Buy a used one and take it to Southern Auto Electric on Moreland Ave. for about 40-45 bucks you will have a brand new one. He does all kinds of Starters, Alternaters, Diesel stuff, old Ford generators and old stuff like that and they look like new ones from the 20's. I've had 3 rebuilt, 2 of mine and 1 for a buddy. They do great work. If I ever need a generator worked on I'm carrying it to them!
Re: '67 Beetle "Judy"
Can anybody recommend a good tutorial on how to rebuild and tune a 30 pict-1 ?
I followed the digram in the rebuild kit but i can't get it to idle at all now.

Re: '67 Beetle "Judy"
Make sure the Air Solenoid vale is opening. Turn key on and remove the wire and touch back to the terminal, valve should click. Make sure you turn the key off after just a few seconds. Might damage your points if it is on very long.
Re: '67 Beetle "Judy"
Reinstalled the interior and the seat belts I got from Pull-a-Part. Took her for a spin. For some reason I've got no power at all in first gear.
Re: '67 Beetle "Judy"
Sounds like a possible Jetting issue in the carb. Maybe clogged up, or a leaky accel pump, or vaccum leak.

Re: '67 Beetle "Judy"
I'll work on it tomorrow. I'm not as familiar with carbs as I need to be. I've been spoiled by my FI on the bus.
Re: '67 Beetle "Judy"
I'm hoping it's not a transmission problem. She has plenty of power in other gears. I had to reverse it up the driveway and she had plenty of power in reverse.
