lol! only on a VW site would 155s be refered to as "monster truck tires". I have 285s on my truck and they are a puney compaired to some of the other trucks at my office.

Re: My 65 Beetle Leela

Post by 86vwgti8v on Sat Jul 09, 2011 10:24 pm

for some reason I'm having a hard time installing the shifter. It looks really simple but when I bolt it down it doesnt want to shift. It will move threw 2 positions. Maybe 1st & 2nd And I have to fight it for that, but won't go side to side.
Any advice?

X2 on the coupling. Also, don't bolt it all the way down and try and find the sweet spot.

I am assuming the D plate is the plate above the linkage bushings? Other wise I may not...

"D" plate fits between the shifter base and the tunnel. Should look like this...

Well, with what you have found so far in your quest for a smooth shift, I'd guess you probably also have an old, worn out shift rod bushing or no bushing at all. This is the plastic sleeve that fits in the hanger (inside the tunnel, just rearward of the gear shifter). While you are working on the shift coupler and plate Glenn mentioned above, I'd go on and install a new one of these as well to ensure you get a smooth shift.

Good thread on the samba with shift rod bushing install tips.
