Where should these wires go?
I'm trying to tie up some loose wires under the dash of my '76 Westy and I'd like to reattach them in the correct place.
Where should this red wire go?
and this blue/green one?
and this blue/white one is plugged into a heavier gauge black wire. Is that correct?
Also, My dome light isn't getting any power and neither is my florescent above the sink.
Suggestions?

Re: Where should these wires go?
I'm guessing the red one goes to the door switch. That is probably your dome light. The striped wire likely runs to the other door to complete a circuit so either door will activate it when opened. I'm guessing the red is power. I'd test that theory by getting a test light or meter and hooking one end to power and the other to the red and cycling the the switch. If the dome light is like my square, it has a 3 position switch built in and you can move it (the light) so the light either, comes on when the door is opened, remains on at all times, or is off at all times.

OK. Just to clarify, when I mentioned the stiped wire above, I was only refering to the 1st picture and the brown & white wire. The blue wire in the last picture is a mystery to me.

Re: Where should these wires go?
Not sure without tracing them down and seeing where they terminate. Do you have the bently manual? It has the color coded diagrams in it. If I can find it i also have the manuals on a cd that you can load on your computer and zoom in to see a bit better. If not see if this helps...

Re: Where should these wires go?
Take the above file to kinkos or office depot and have them print it out for you in color on a "d" sized plot (33"X22") this will fold up well and is large enough to actually read. The files wer scanned in at a resolution well enough to be printed out that large w/o too much grainyness.
I have printed off a color wiring diagram for all my beetles / busses / ghias that I have ever owned, they changed wires just about every year and you can waste ALLOT of time tracing down wires.
You will also need to print off the Bosch list for all the #'s that are used on the VW wiring schematics.
You will not be sorry you did this...

Re: Where should these wires go?
Thanks for all the advice. I suspect this was what cuased my light issues. My manual has a black and white schematic that doesn't enlarge very well. This'll help a lot.
Re: Where should these wires go?
Yes, it is in the general folder for all those electrical drawings at the bottom i believe.
It will let you know more than what is on the electrical drawing's legend.
It is a standard adopted by german auto makers to make the legends "easier" to read...
For example if you follow your little colored wire drawings to either the top or bottom of the drawing, it'll end in a #. This # correlates to a # on the Bosch chart like #546 = exterior lighting for tow package.... (just a made up example...)

Re: Where should these wires go?
What about the colored numbers in the middle of the schematic? for example the orage 14 right about the 3 on the lower left?
Re: Where should these wires go?
See item T20 on the diagram (right above 68 on the bottom line). That is the test socket. Those orange numbers mean the wire terminates at the test socket at that terminal #.

Re: Where should these wires go?
Thanks for the help.
Picture 1 went from the door switch and had come detached from fuse 8.
Picture 2 went to the back of the dash for the EGR light.
Picture 3 went to the rear window defrost knob.
They're all now reconnected in the right place.
Don't know how it could possibly be related but now she starts up quicker than ever. Probably just coincidence but weird.
I think I broke my turn signal relay again so my signals aren't working anymore. Looks like I need to order another one.

What! The one we put in from my other bus had not been re-ordered yet and needed one to replace it and went digging and found that the one from my Eurovan cluster worked. So if they want some un-godly amount for it looks like the ones from other models will fit. Maybe go to a Flaps and check the prices for rabbits, golfs, euros, any model and see what they have. have seen some relays that they want twice the amount for that is the same for different models. Case and point, a friend needed the intermittent wiper switch for his bus, the bus one was around $60, rabbit one was $45, but could get the same switch for a Porsche 914 for $25. Go figure.......
Re: Where should these wires go?
I was working fine before I detached the fuse box to get to the connections on the top. I'm gonna double check to make sure I didn't know something off before I look for another one.
