70 or 71 Bay?

Post by daltondragger73 on Sat Feb 19, 2011 8:48 pm

Ok so I'm finally getting back into a VW Twisted Evil I found a Bay and the guy tells me its a 70 tags inside the door say its a 70 but it has a small 5 lug pattern & disk breaks up front scratch I was told its prob. a early 71???? but taged a 70?? need some insight!! first bus

I went back to it today and spent over an hour looking it over, 1600dp rebuilt about 3yrs ago only has 20k on the motor since trnny shifts fine OH and it started right up after sittin 4 months. Underneath/floors are decent some patch work has been done by current owner, support rails (side to side) have rust at edges looks fixable, frame rails (front to back) are solid, heater channels are coverd by a insalation so cant see them, battery tray normal rust, engine comp. looks real good new seals (@rebuild) body is straight, a lil dent in the nose and passenger rear corner looks like someone hit it with a hammer Neutral around bottom edges of the body there is rust that has been patched and coverd with bondo Rolling Eyes but you can only tell if your up close, the roof is real good!! windows all work doors all open and shut with no problem, paint is not Og and its a crappy job, brown is not my choice of color, kinda looks like a SH#* box, no pun intended!!the og color is green and white can see it in the door jams, Its a transporter so no walk thru, altho it does have the clips for delux trim!! my thought is to fix the bottom rust, slam it and drive it and do the rest slowly Ill get pics as soon as its all paid for and back to my house

DAVE.....whut up.....
What's the vin number...you can go by it for the model year.
Also there should be a sticker on the drivers side door jam that will have the model year if it hasn't been removed already.

Thats a weird # in the door, if its 10/70 then its a 71. New models came out in Oct each year.

Dave there is a tag behind the drivers seat.

Should LOOK like this, yours will of course have different numbers......

Go to this web site, select your year group, in your case the 70 - 79 and enter the numbers from your tag in the format you see on the site. When entered hit the button "Uncode my M-Plate", took me a while to see that button to get it to work.
http://www.vw-mplate.com/mcode.php

If ya entered all the numbers right you should get a page back that looks like this......
http://www.vw-mplate.com/mcode.php?lang=EN&id=5793

This page will tell ya when it was built, what color it was and where it was headed when built. Very cool site.

Good thing about the bays is the door jamb sticker. No need to decode for the year since it has the date posted. Non walk thru does make me want to see the m-codes thou. Does it have a full width middle seat? With the clips might be a Deluxe 9 passenger, one of my favorite bays next to the campers!

Maybe get some pics of the area and can see if its worth fixing. It is fixable, but worth fixing is another question. My 73 is like that but the worst on mine is the front beam. it has actually broken 3 times. Have a ton of scrap metal patched into the breaks and still drive it. Floors were the same, sheet metal and some screws and its fine.
the first time the beam broke I was driving up in Va and had to hit the brakes hard and the front end went POP! That thing was all over the road the rest of the trip. Took me 11 hours to limp it home (after the campout of course) but you should see my seat after all the pinching comming down the mountain!!!!!

OK!!! did my M-plate thing it came in as a 71 but 08/70 and YES BABY its a 9 passenger!!! 3-3-3 also didnt have a city for a destination it just said general east coast, I found a thread on the samba where a guy had pretty much the same issues I do and he repaired it so
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=455598

so I think Freddy Mercury sang it the best... Another one saved a bus!!
