Polishing window trim...How??

I am trying to polish the trim that fits in the window rubber for the Squareback. I started with easy-off and Scotch Brite pads to take off any remaining factory coating. Then I wet sanded with, 600, 800, 1000, 1500, and finally 2000 grit sandpaper. I dried it and then used metal polish. It looks better than it did when I started, but it is not as shiny as I had hoped. Any ideas? Can I get it to actually shine?

I will clear coat it once I get it as shiny as I think it will get.

It is usually best to use a high speed grinder/buffer with different types of polishing compound. Like you start with the coarse compound stick then finish with the fine compound with the fine polishing wheel. It is tough to get a good shine with elbow grease only.

Good post. Was wondering the same. How to do it with a hi speed tool without damaging the rubber.

I have the trim out of the rubber and I'm afraid my buffer will grab it and turn it into a pretzel. It twists and bends easily.

Oh it will. On my deluxe trim, I screwed it down to some MDF and polished it on it.

Do you have a bench mounted grinder? Those work best for fragile parts.

I don't have one, but it sounds like a good excuse to buy one.

We always used a product called Wenol. It will make anything shine.
Pretty easy to find via the web.
