Nice. lets see some pics of the one piece front end open. I'd really want to see how you did your hinge. I have a 61 deluxe baja i'm working on, and i'm going with a one piece as well.

The hinge was built into the bumper. I purchased eveything through bugstuff in Pa. The only thing is that it didn't open far I had to extend the bumper out to get a little more space to open it. I'll get some pictures up tonight, one thing I found out putting on the one piece, if you are going to mount the headlights in the front end make sure that the headlight holes are plumb mine are tipped back and my headlights are adjusted down, thats why I had to use the eyebrows to cover the gap at the top of my headlights

i'm gonna paint mine completely in truck bed liner XD. i plan to take mine off roading, as well as break all kinds of suspension stuff. infact, i really don't expect the one piece to stay attached to the vehicle very long anyhow, but i'll give it a shot Laughing Twisted Evil

My 73 baja beetle Empty Still alittle rough

Post by pwmcguire on Sat May 22, 2010 8:17 pm

The reason why I said it was a little rough showed up one morning, I spun A bearing. It was banging away, Valves look good, but I have baseball every weekend with my son. I didn't have time to investigate fully.

If it really is a rod bearing, thats nothing some straight 50 weight, and a bottle of motor honey, won't solve, lol. I once poured a quart of gear oil in a buddies f100 ford when it was knocking. it actually quieted it down a good bit. but exploded shortly after, lol.

Looks like its time for a tear down. might either need a good used crank, or yours MIGHT be fine. won't know till you tear her down. Are you sure its a rod tho? once i thought i had a rod bearing bad, but it turned out to be the cylinder head came loose. by loose, i mean some of the nuts on the studs, had actually fallen off Shocked . It had a horrible mettalic sounding BANG BANG BANG. I still haven't fixed that yet (on my 74 super). i'll try to take a vid of it, to see if it sounds similar.

-Mike

EDIT: And geeze man, you got a baja. it shouldn't take you more then 15 minutes to yank that motor out, especially without an apron lol Laughing . sorry i couldn't resist, lol.

My 73 baja beetle Empty Thanks for the support

Post by pwmcguire on Mon May 24, 2010 4:46 pm

Like I said baseball is taking up alot of time, didn't get in till 12:00 last night but he won 1st place. Two practices through the week. We have our own tournament coming up soon, then off to Panama City for another tournament. Panama City will be the last one, maybe after that I will have some more time to tear it out.

My 73 baja beetle Empty good news

Post by pwmcguire on Thu Aug 12, 2010 5:36 pm

I managed to pick up a mid america motorworks rebuilt 1600 long block that has been sitting unused for a year for $500 dollars,
it still had the plastic on it. I thought it was a good deal, we will see. they go for about $1,300 shipped. Very Happy

It's installed and running. I took it to work today. It was a blast.

While my 73 was fun, I sold it yesterday. Now I have some cash for my 66, after 20 years I don't really miss it. I'm looking forward to driving my 66.
